Geno just won his 1,200th game. Great accomplishment. But ESPN calls him the 3rd in Division 1 history to accomplish this. He’s behind a Coach K and Tara Vandeever.

Ok, the part that annoys me…why do they (ESPN) insist on lumping the men’s game with the women’s game when it comes to the record book? Might as well say Ray Tanner is only 67 wins away from joining them because Baseball isn’t Baskstball, but the men’s game is completely different from the women’s game. This is not about level of play or any of that. Geno and Coach K have never coached against any of the same teams. It’s the same sport in terms of basketball, but a completely different type.

In my opinion, they minimize the women’s game by attempting to do this. Their intention is the opposite, but to me the women’s game would be better off being it’s own thing rather than try to insert itself into the men’s record book.

They literally play different leagues. It would be like saying NCAA coaches belong in the NBA record books. There is no common competition. It’s 2 completely different record books. Geno can’t win the NCAA Men’s National Championship and Coach K couldn’t win the women’s. Why would you combine record books for 2 different things?

Feel free to ignore. It won’t change my life for a millisecond. It’s actually silly you’d post that you’d ignore it rather than just do it. Regardless, I think you’ve completely misread the post or refuse to read it as it is. As I said, it’s not an issue of level / quality of play. I think you refuse to believe that. But it really has to do with logic that these are 2 completely different leagues. I didn’t say whether this is a slight to Geno or Coach K. Coach K doesn’t belong in the women’s record books as much as Geno doesn’t belong in the men’s record books. They should have separate record books. Just like the leading scorer in 18 & Under Church League shouldn’t be the county leading scorer in High School Basketball. Sure, same age and sport…but different leagues. But you’ll choose to believe I’m comparing leagues and saying Geno isn’t worthy. Nope…they are simply literally 2 different leagues.

Fact: Geno has never coached an NCAA Men’s Basketball Game.

Fact: Coach K has never coached an NCAA Women’s Basketball Game.

Why are they in the same record book???

Because average boys high school teams would run the best college women's teams out of the gym. Happens every year in soccer and basketball- 14 and under boys teams beating women's national teams by 40 points in basketball and 5 goals in soccer.

Dude you’ve got to be kidding me. Merge the leagues together and see just how many wins Auriemma and VanDeveer rack up. Good grief what is wrong with our society.

Well put. But since he's supposed to have you on ignore, he'll never get to read about how he overreacted.

Yep. There’s a reason college women’s teams practice against men. Example, UT does it. So they can get better bc they know a rag tag team of boys on campus who played in HS best prepare them to improve

Good point. Baseball and softball have separate record books.

The real problem with this is that they play in completely different eras. WBB is just now becoming really competitive. Of course Tara, Geno and Pat accomplished amazing things in their careers. But the type of dominance hasn't been possible in the men's game since Wooden....

Another example is found in MLB. They have MLB records but also league records for the AL and NL. Because they are different leagues.

Do you have a source for this, or is it a decent guess on your part?

It’s a different game since the balls are different sizes.

Never heard of the women's basketball national team losing to under 14 boys, but the women's soccer national team lost to under 15 boys.

Yes. And that was Dallas area boys. Not national. So a Dallas area group of under 15 boys beat the US national team. A good men high school team would beat a wnba team by 50.

Hey guys! Thanks for all the replies. Sorry FootballLVR, I haven't been following this all day because I have a life. Just checking in now as I've done on a regular basis for the past 20+ years. Not sure why this has me listed as a "new member" but then there are a lot of glitches on this site (Note to admins... something in your pop-up ads is causing the cursor to move so that typing freezes).

Looks like VA Cock is the only one who could legitimately answer my question of the difference between men's and women's basketball. The ball is smaller for the women. The court is the same size. The basket is the same height. AFAIK, the rules are identical. Granted, the men play two halves whereas the women play 4 quarters, just like every other level of basketball, so there's that difference.

Fried Chicken quickly cleared up his/her statement by saying that they play in different leagues. Completely true and for that reason I agree they should have their own record books, which they do. However, since they're in different leagues I'd ask if that might change some of your opinions on the stats of players or coaches who were in both the ABA and NBA, or the AFL and NFL.

So yes, men's and women's basketball are different leagues, but they're the same sport. Feel free to resume the argument of whether coaching records are comparable. Either way you look at it, Geno and Coach K have won a crap-ton of games. Hell, ask THEM if they think they should be discussed together. As for this "new member", I'm getting ready to have dinner and watch our women beat the crap out of Missouri!

Oh, and Fried Chicken, it wasn't you who I ignored (obviously). Based on some of the above comments though, I may be adding a few more names to my list. :>)

Once the ABA & NBA, merged (same with AFL & NFL) to become one league, then I understand the record books merging. That’s part of the merge.

But looking at a present day example of the UFL…if QB threw for 70 TDs this season it would be ridiculous to say he broke Tom Brady’s single season record. If someday the UFL merged with the NFL, I guess you have to include it in the record book, but it would always be viewed differently. We saw this a couple of weeks ago with the noted playoff struggles with the Detroit Lions. Most of any success they had was before the Super Bowl era, so it was recorded, but certainly viewed with an “asterisk” of sorts.

As far as how the women’s game is different, I have a hard time believing you truly looking for literal answers rather than getting into the quality / competitive argument that others often get into. But if so, there are a number of differences other than the size of the ball. 3 point line is closer, ladies play quarters instead of halves, then you can get into the speed of the game, etc…in some areas the women’s game could arguably be superior to the men’s, most notably fundamental basketball as many have pointed out over the years.

But as mentioned, it wasn’t the intention to get into all of that (though many did). Rather to just point out how ridiculous it is to include men in the ladies record books and the other way around.

But I still can’t believe you pulled for Clemson over UNC 😉 Enjoy the game and Go Cocks!

For a time in the early 1950's NCAA (mens) basketball played 4 10-minute quarters.

For practices, the women hoopsters scrimmage against USC male students who likely played high school ball.

I have nothing to base it on other than my gut, but I think the USC women could hold their own on the court against an "average" male high school team and an NCAA D-III or NAIA male team which is "below-average" Guys at these lower (lowest?) levels likely don't have the speed and strength that upper D-III, D-II, and D-I have.
