3. Rick Stansbury (Mississippi State)

I'll be blunt here: Nobody knows how to cheat and not get caught better than Rick Stansbury. I haven't been to Starkville, MS, but from what I've been told, there's a Kroger, a Pizza Hut, a couple of stoplights and an SEC university. The basketball team has next to no tradition, yet Stansbury has pulled in some unbelevable classes, mainly by using the AAU circuits, which are ruining the game. In the original recruiting ploy to secure a commitment from Scotty Hopson, I'm pretty sure that Stansbury signed several of his AAU teammates. Some call it conquering the recruiting machine, I call it shady, but except for the Hopson situation, it's worked to perfection for State.

Or actually 1A. Plus i like how he spins the Pearl-Gillespie recruiting battle for Hopson by stating that UK wasn't really interested in Hopson.

I especially loved this part
Bruce Pearl is a very good recruiter, and he is 0-1 against Billy Gillispie for recruits where both parties showed marked interest (I don't count Scotty Hopson or Bobby Maze because I'm not sure UK was as interested in those two as people were led to believe)
So, in other words, Gillespie is 1-0 against Pearl in recruiting if you don't coun't those two guys Pearl signed. I think most of us would say that's 1-2 against Pearl in recruiting.

Isn't it a good thing when people start hatin' on State? I can't wait for the days when everyone stops stroking Croom.

who were Hopson's teamates that we were supposedly "signing" to get him?

I don't think he played on the same AAU team we got the Delks, Varnado and Barry from, but I could be wrong. I know he wasn't on Osby's team.

I'll be blunt here also, this guys a douche.

Next to no basketball tradition is code word for repeatedly going to the big dance, attaining SEC titles, and oh yea a FINAL FOUR.

he was part of the Midstate program. that is the same program that Reggie and Richard Delk, Jarvis, and Stewart all played in as well.
obviously, there is an age diffrence though. Reggie and Richard would have been seniors in HS when Hopson was a freshman.
so though they didnt exactly compete together, they all came up thru the same AAU program.

I'm guessing Stans comes in at #10 in X's and O's behind AU and SC.

Rick didn't get all of those guys, just to get to Hopson. Hopson didn't really burst onto the scene until his junior year and then made his biggest jump in the rankings during his senior year. I'm sure Rick recruited him as a sophomore, but Rick signed Richard and Reginald because he wanted Reggie and his brother wasn't too bad either. He recruited Jarvis because he wanted Jarvis, and through Jarvis, Richard, Reggie....he knew about Stewart, who he offered a late scholarship to after some higher-level prospects went elsewhere.

I mean seriously, is there a better way to lose all credibility right off the bat? If Starkville was half as bad as the <17>ing media would have you believe the school would have shut down decades ago. Is it Nashville, Athens or Gainesville? Absolutely not, but it is a great place to go to school and most of the visitors I know that have given it a chance and gone in with an open mind have loved it. I really wish some of these ******* media types would spend a football weekend with me in Starkville and then see what they think.

.........comment. He admits he's never been there, and as usual it shows. His description of Starkville sounds like it's circa 1990. 2008 Starkville is a thriving, growing place from my account, moreso even than Clinton, where I live.

.............way that people in most other places of the country up north and out west think about the deep south. They grow up hearing that the south is full of a bunch of torch-bearing, sheet-wearing racists who lynch black people, so that's what they believe.

Stans has been here at state what 14 years? I think the man knows how to get the job done. Hell I guess when you win the west so many times it makes you a cheat because you are so good? Hell then if we where paying players so much then why the hell did we not sign Monta and Outlaw? I guess the only way we got Lawrence Roberts is because we paid him more money than the other schools he was interested in? Come on, tell this dude to get a life.

"Hell then if we where paying players so much then why the hell did we not sign Monta and Outlaw?"

Because the NBA offered more

"I guess the only way we got Lawrence Roberts is because we paid him more money than the other schools he was interested in? "

it was a combination of that, family ties to Mississippi, and the fact we had no post player for him to compete with...money was only 1/3 of the equation

All you need to know about this dipshit and his writing is farther down the page in that article.

Here is what he says about state and Croom

Croom wants to believe it the most. But hey, in the end, we know aliens and MSU football aren't for real. I admire the drive, but sorry.
And here is what he says about Rich freakin Brooks.

But he's always been known as a loser. Not anymore. Now he's a stone cold assassian, picking off SEC powers one by one, year by year.

What the freak is this guys problem with MSU? Guess some of those battles that Stans had the upper hand on players that UK didn't want anyway really stuck in this guys head.

From where his grandparents lived, it would be at least as easy to drive to New Orleans and catch a flight to pretty much anywhere in the country as it would be to drive to Starkville. They were no more than an hour from the New Orleans airport and they were over 4 hours from Starkville.

..I liked it much better when we paid the family directly instead of having to go through AAU coaches.
