</div><div>To me, that is a Safety problem (although I obviously realize there are other contributing factors). To be honest, I never thought that highly of Charles Mitchell. I mean, I think he is a solid player, but he has always been stiff and a liability in space. I think someone pointed out that he has something like 4 pass break ups in his college career...that is just ridiculous. Bonner has some flashes, but I REALLY hated Bonner up until the last half of 2010, when it seems like he finally learned how to wrap up. Whitley seems to be improving every game, and I think he is the best of the bunch. He had a problem with taking bad angles to the ball early on, but that seems to be improving as well. I still have to wonder if we wouldn't be better off with Banks at safety and Slay at CB. </div><div>
</div><div>On the bright side, our offense is tied for 4th in the league with 51 10+ yard plays so far. I am not sure if we had 51 10+ yard plays in full seasons of Croom ball. </div>

how soft our corners play. I think all 3 of our safties are pretty good againt the run, but pass coverage is their weakness. Whitley and Mitchell are like 2 strong safties.

I think Banks was on his way to being 1st team All-SEC FS after his freshmen year.

Most of the big plays we have given up have been runs off the edges where neither our DE's or OLB's could get containment. Being that those are our two weakest positions on the field, we should be scheming around that. So to me it is a coaching problem.

Bama - only 15 plays of 10 yards or more? That's ridiculous, but they have played three offensively challenged teams. LSU's 28 plays is more impressive since they have played State and Oregon, two offenses that have proven they can move the ball on most defenses.

If Mitchell wasnt getting juked out of his pants on the corner as well, those would have been 8 yard runs instead of 15. Not to mention those deep plays over the middle, Emory Blake's TD on 3rd and long, Randle's TD over Broomfield and Mitchell. I swear if you go watch every long run Auburn or LSU had, you will see that one of our safeties had an opportunity to shut it down. You might say that it is our linebackers job to do that, but when your safeties are supposed to be a team strength, they should at least be able to cover for the LBs and cut down the big plays. <div>
</div><div>Sure, there is blame to go around and DE is probably prime suspect 1B, but have you not noticed over the last 4 years that any time someone wanted to pick up a 3rd and long against us, they were throwing a deep to intermediate pass over the middle of the field? </div><div>

I agree - Mitchell has been a workhouse but I notice more bad plays that good over the career. I can already remember more impact plays from Whitley than I can from Mitchell.

Good player, but not great by any means.

I've wondered the same thing - would putting Slay at a CB and Banks at S be a better fit? Banks seemed to have very natural instincts when he was at S

I guess our coaches don't want to move our best corner. I wonder if Slay has gotten any reps at FS?

not the players choice. For some reason our coaches don't seem to trust the DBs at all in coverage, hence the very little man coverage and super big cushions in zone. They have changed their tune a little after playing LSU, and are now saying they are going to rely on them more than they have been. I think they are the key to our defense improving. Let them put the defense on their shoulders since they are the most experienced and hopefully that will help out the LBs and DLs to make some plays.

Last year our LBs and DLs were good enough that they could put pressure on the QB before WRs could get open in our really holey zones. That is not the case this year and average QBs like Jarrett Lee are shredding us because his WRs are getting wide open in the holes of our coverage.

With that said, Charles Mitchell is basically nonexistent in pass coverage. I would just play a 4-4-3 defense rather than have him bite on a run on every single pass play. Then maybe the tackles he makes will be at the line of scrimmage instead of after 8-15 yards. But yeah I would definitely be for sitting him some and getting Slay or Banks back there to make some plays. Depending on Slay's ability and effectiveness at each position.

Would anyone beside myself like to see what Joe Lee could do with consistently good football players? How old is Joe Lee?
