I think its downright hypocritical and disgusting for a university that received $49.9 million dollars in fiscal 2022 (like each of the SEC schools did for their participation in you know, athletics) to deposit 100% of that and then turn right around to the fans and say "if you want to compete and get better you have to belly up to the bar or else......"
Ultimately this is what’s going to drive the eventual and inevitable mass secession of the P5 from the NCAA. Aside from being hypocritical, it’s just fiscally irresponsible to keep inflating these schools already bloated athletic revenue slush funds with even more money they can’t even invest in what generates it in the first place.

What happens with this stupid excess is that schools build a brand new whatever-the-17 every 10 years. Weight room, athletic academic center, IPF, activity center / lounge, locker room, nutritional center, video game rooms, training / recovery center, spa / massage center, blah blah blah. Schools flush hundreds of millions down the toilet for this stuff that nobody 17ing needs, then tear it down and do it all over again. Why? Because 99% of the time they are public universities, and money in the budget has to be spent somewhere.

Florida won 2 national titles in the 2000’s, and didn’t (and still might not) have any kind of indoor practice building on their campus. Just one example. None of those things do anything to generate revenue. Nobody’s picking Bama over UGA because they like the Samsung QLED in their locker better than UGA’s 2-year old LG’s that are only 4K and not 8K resolution. It’s so stupid.

Disband from the NCAA, give most of THAT money and the huge TV money to the players / coaches. Legalize anything and everything about paying players, but put in a max cap per school that incrementally increases each year, to maintain some form of parity and competitiveness (which is also what drives revenue). Tighten the reigns on NIL so that it really is NIL. Heisman Trophy winner gets asked to be in a Pepsi commercial….cool. Some 3* no-name high school guy that UGA grabbed late to fill in for an unexpected open scholarship getting an $80,000 truck and $10,000 per month for “autographs”…..17 that.

The have-nots are trying to swim upriver. If Kentucky fans ever managed to match Georgia’s current NIL coffers, Georgia would just go back to their donors and up the ante. Kentucky wouldn’t get better players. They’d just reset the market to a higher level that everyone would respond to.
