Stop me if you've heard this before: Rick Cleveland thinks a coach should have been given more time

I'm not linking it nor did I read it because Cleveland is a hack whose production has never measured up to his reputation, but the headline read "Chris Lemonis had at least earned the right to finish season".

I'll just assume he did a copy/paste on the coach's name for the same column he wrote when David Cutcliffe, Jackie Sherrill, Ed Orgeron, Sylvester Croom, Houston Nutt, Matt Luke, Joe Moorhead, and Zack Arnett were let go not to mention Stansbury, Rod Barnes, Jeff Bower, Polk II, and any number of other coaches whose tenures outlived their usefulness over the years.

"Earned the right" to finish his 7th season? We gave him that luxury last season. And the two seriously crappy ones before that. Exactly how many years have we suffered enough so that it would be okay to fire him mid-season - 10? 20? There's no logic in that, Guv.

The patient stopped breathing a couple years ago, and we kept waiting for him to come back to life. At some point you just have to call it so everyone can move on.

Well you know these guys get paid to write something. Sometimes I'm sure it's difficult to find a topic so they take the easy road. If we had not fired him they would be writing stories about how long we're we gonna wait ? Is mediocrity the standard at MSU ? Doesn't matter what ya do. Somebody always has an opinion.

I defy you to find a Rick Cleveland column advocating for the removal of a sitting coach. No MS sportswriter has ever banked as much material on all the sports figures he has interacted with as Cleveland. Can’t threaten that gravy train by taking a hard opinion.

He “earned the right” to finish his 5th season. If you ask me he was damn lucky to get a 6th & most of a 7th.

He didn't deserve to be here last season or this one. The fact that he continued to get a check after horrible '22 & '23 seasons is a head scratcher for me
Made worse by the pretty well known rumor that Lemonis was pissed when Selmon didn’t give him an extension after last season.

Because after all, traveling to someone else’s regional and getting quickly knocked out is the bar we’ve set for postseason baseball success at MSU…

He sure as sh*t didn’t mind writing a probation article on the daily when Jackie was going through his sh*t.

Rick Cleveland is a sports writer because he has neither the skills nor the abilities to manage anyone nor anything. He is cut out to bloviate and pontificate and ruminate and cogitate and commentate and generally do much of nothing while others get $h!+ done.

We played VA in the finals of that Regional last year and lost 9-2

Back in the good old days when the coach got $25K, a car and free gas at the Texaco in town, I would agree with you.

These days it's $1.25M and when you're paid that much, wherever you may be employed, it's only about results. Not good old fella feelings.

Well way back in the day, he wrote an article that mentioned me by name. I do still have the article even though his blovation over my actionation made me question his pontification.

And Larry Templeton. There has never been a time that Rick Cleveland's concerns were for MSU's best interests.

Rick Cleveland is a Mississippi sports writer legend. I may disagree with him on this but that doesn’t change who he is.
Two things can be true at once. I was thinking 17 him for being all over us about Lemonis in his latest article. I also like some of his stuff. So, I was hoping I was not the only one that thought he was a hack sometimes as well. Nobody is perfect. I would assume over a career as long as his he would be hacky sometimes.

There was a time when we could legitimately complain about CL coverage of us when it was run by the Hedermans, a huge Ole Miss family. Then they went to Gannet and the work was just bad.

Mississippi Today is similar to the earlier CL in that it's funded by Barksdale and Scruggs, two massive Johnnie Reb homers. Editor Adam Ganucheau is a huge Johnnie Reb as well.

Rick knows where his bread is buttered and how to slant his articles. I don't blame him. He's a mustard buzzard at heart. I enjoy his work.

I must vehemently disagree with Cleveland when he says, " I don’t see anything to be gained with firing the man with three weeks remaining in the regular season. " Here are three things, 1) A post-season berth can possibly be salvaged. We were going nowhere fast with Lem. We now have a spark that might give us a better chance 2) It gives Justin Parker a shot to show what he can do and contend for the job himself. 3) It prevents complicating what is inevitable with Lemonis. What mississippi did in 22 probably happens once every 100 years. I say if something that crazy is going to happen it will happen no matter who is coaching.

Lem needed to go. Forget about 3 weeks of grace this season. Lem was given two whole seasons of grace after the utter debacles of 22 and 23 that came after a NC! Rick you are barking up the wrong tree here my friend.

I would like Rick C to answer this question. What difference does it make firing someone now vs at the end of the season if you have already make up your mind to do it? The answer cannot really be just in case he pulls a Bianco because the odds on that are akin to winning the lottery.

He was also one of the loud voices calling for hiring Croom simply because of his minority status. I still remember him having an earnest discussion with a minority janitor at MSU that said it was past time to hire a black coach. Not necessarily a good coach, just a black coach.

Sounds like the average writer at MS Today
