Student Busses to Indy

Question for the board... When PSU made the B10 Championship game the school had busses that got them to the game and back (My daughter was there then). It seems like other schools have done the same in recent years. My son is a PSU senior and got tickets expecting the same thing however he is being told by the school that there are no plans for any transportation for students. This seems like a terrible idea for the school - do they really think that having a bunch of kids driving to Indy and back is a good idea? Does anyone know of any transportation being arranged for students (maybe he isnt talking to the right people) - thanks for any help.

That's awful. One of my favorite Penn State student experiences was the Sweet 16 in 2001 when PSU chartered 16 buses for the students and we all headed down in a caravan. My hotel room become the game after party for the team until the cops shut it down. I'll have to post my pics with (very high) Endu Egekeze and Banta types if I can find them. After it was shut down my roomate and I headed to the nearest strip club we could find in Atlanta. We were the only 2 white guys in the building, rolling in wearing mesh shorts and tees. Was definitely one of those record-screech to a stop type moments. We were too young and dumb to care. Of course I just started inviting everyone back to our hotel to finish all the leftover drinks.

Why does anyone think it's the Universities responsibility to get anyone to this game? Four days ago no one thought we'd be in this game!

Because it's great for the university, it's student, their enduring love of the school, the football program, and our school, and creates an awesome atmosphere at the game by making it easy for thousands of students to be there. And it's really easy. Please tell me the reasons you wouldn't want the school to do this?

I don't give a crap if the school does it or not. If you want to go to an away game, than figure it out. However, it's not the school's responsibility to setup a "bus/plane/road" trips for anyone. As a student I went to two bowl games and both times my friends and I got together, planned a trip, and had a ball.

That's fine and I certainly know friends that did the bowls on their own, I just think it's so easy for the school to orchestrate and provides so much benefit, why not? Difference of opinion on how to run a business I suppose.

Tioga, I understand where you are comming from.

This isn't a "bowl game", the team needs a terrific amount of support against a premier team as Oregon.

Remember:
OUR F`n university gave a minimum of $3 million to anyone (un vetted) in the Sandusky case,
and the university can't offer "chump change" for student's travel transportation to the game?

THIS IS SO...............

“University’s responsibility “…since 11.9/11 it’s been apparent the sole purpose of the university is to serve as a cash cow for corrupt trustees and their cronies in the construction industry…

Amazing how many people want the governing body to take care of their every little need, rather than just figure out how to take care of themselves.

It’s not really a crazy thought, is it? Seems like a thing schools do pretty often.

Well, a couple of things

1. Was there student interest in this? I did a quick glance at the PSU SGA and GoPSUSports website and no mention of any interest - or trying to draw interest.

2. Were there busses available? The University contracts primarily with Fullington Trailways, and no idea if they had already been contracted for other services/charters at that time.

Is it a crazy thought? No. But have all the potential issues associated with why there not be any busses been through through? Also no.

As for #2, this goes back to the 2021 season, so not sure if it's still an issue...after one of our games that season, the Fullington drivers taking an away team to the airport told me that after they were done at the airport dropping off the team, the three busses were on their way to Morgantown, WV to pick up the WVU football team at their airport and take them back to their football building. It's like a 3 hour drive, but they said that there was such a bus driver shortage that they were going incredible distances for some of their trips since no one could find busses. They weekend before, they had been in Buffalo to drive a visiting team to/from the airport for a Univ of Buffalo game.

I'd hope it's gotten better in the past 3 years, but there is a chance that coming up with ~8 busses (if we had 300 kids that were interested) on short notice isn't as easy as it was 5/10/20 years ago.

Good and fair questions. Better than assuming people want governing bodies to take care of every little need.

Sure. You don’t think so?
Well, lets take a look at your comment to me....

Good and fair questions. Yes they were. It does not take much effort to think things through and do at least a modicum of research.

Better than assuming people want governing bodies to take care of every little need. I never assumed people want governing bodies to take care of every little need. However, from the tones of the posts, it was evident that was the expectation - that the University would take care of setting up busses. (and nothing else was implied as the expectation) The use of hyperbole is important to illustrate the point that I was making.

Not sure how this thread got political. Wanting an enormous University to at least put together bus trips is not needy. It's common sense as it lowers the cost per person per trip. Wanting them to subsidize them in some way isn't ridiculous either. Their budget is insane and OPP probably spends more on bathroom and light fixtures in a month than a few buses would cost.

I think you're discounting what the busses would cost. If we're doing 8-10 busses, I'd guess you're starting to get into mid-5 figures.

It's only political if you can't understand nuances and hyperbole.

When I say subsidize, I sort of mean share in the costs w/ the students. IE use the U's buying power to get the best deal, and give the students a good break. Sort of like a Costco rotisserie chicken. Costs money, but pays for itself in goodwill and other ways.

Didnt mean to start a political discussion - just wanted some info. In 2016 PSU got busses setup for the students that were going to the game... Students still paid for them, but they were available. Other schools do the same thing, so it seems reasonable that PSU would do that this time. The benefits to the school seem pretty obvious... 1) get more PSU fans to a game that will likely be lightly attended based on ticket prices. 2) Drastically reduce the worst case scenario of some kid wrecking his car driving to or back from the game... From what my son tells me, a lot of students that bought tickets did so thinking this would be available - but now are selling them.

It's not the university's responsibility but I think it would be a good idea. I remember when the university got several buses to take kids to MSG to see the basketball team in the NIT.
