That 4th down play on our first drive in the 3rd quarter was from the 34...hardly a guaranteed field goal. That's about a 51 yard kick, which is well past Herrera's career long. Going for it on 4th and 4 made sense.

I think you're thinking of the 4th and 1 play at Missouri's 17 in the 2nd quarter. That one would have been an easy kick for Herrera.
As for me, my problem in the third quarter was with the situation where we had a two-score lead and opted for an option that gave them the ball on our end of the field, thus opening floodgates that weren't secured until after we had lost all of that lead - plus some.

Yeah, that one was a very aggressive call for sure. When we got stuffed on the play that was blown dead for replay, I told my wife in the stands that we should punt.

However, with the way our defense played in the second half, the chances of us stopping them whether we punted there or not were pretty low.

It was a terrible call, but I can understand WHY he did it. It was tantalizing to think with Sellers and Sanders in the backfield, you should be able to move the ball 12 inches.

But that's where a coach's head has to overrule his heart. He should have had a sense for the flow of the game at that point, knowing that Mizzou had all the momentum, our offense wasn't operating like it had in the first half, and considering field position.

Hopefully it's a lesson learned.

I really just can't see players opting out because we missed the playoff. Maybe other reasons. It would be the comedy of all comedies if Gamecock football were opting out because WE missed the playoffs.

It just seems like good things happen when Sellers makes plays with his feet. In the 3rd, it seems like we became too reliant on traditional run plays. Then, in the 4th, he did one of his Houdini-like escapes from a sack, made a play, and then the offense was suddenly clicking again.
We got way to conservative…again…and almost cost us. We went too conservative against LSU and it did cost us. Why cant we just trust our young QB or our backup QB to make plays through the air in critical games. Glad we won!

He should have learned this lesson as early as the Kentucky game in '21.
