In 2008 my wife and I were living in a small house in Ridgeland, and were looking for a bigger place to start a family. We looked at Jackson (mainly Belhaven and Fondren) and Madison. The biggest pros for Jackson were short commutes (we both worked downtown at the time) the neighborhoods were pretty and established, and a lot of the houses had cool, older-house features.

But Madison won almost every other category, and for me it strictly came down to money: I'm going to pay property/school taxes and buy car tags in both places, so which one is going to give me more for my money? Compared to Madison, Jackson's roads were rougher, its police and fire protection spottier, and its public schools were going to mean we'd wind up paying tuition to JA/First Pres-Prep for 18 years per kid. So for me it was a no-brainer as a financial decision.
No family is going to locate to Jackson right now, I think we all know that. Even the folks who live in Eastover likely have some family tie to that area, and many of them are headed out to Madison too. Only people who would consider it are young people and older singles, and truth be known, there's not even really any nightlife scene downtown at the moment.

That's why it's so important to form some consolidated downtown entertainment district, first and foremost.

He’s right. I haven’t lived in Jackson in 15 years, but as someone observing from the outside, there’s potential for growth. Getting utilities functioning and a small area near UMMC/capitol safe is the first step. I was there a couple months ago and really felt there was a lot of good real estate. The area Hunter Evans started with Elvie’s has developed nicely. Make the whole area around Baptist/First Pres/UMMC/Fondren reliably safe, get single healthcare people comfortable living there, then get to the point where it’s good enough young families.

People are not moving back into Jackson, nor should they. 8 people got shot after the St Paddy's day parade this weekend. People with options are not going into that war zone.
This, I grew up there, but moved away for better paying career options. There's hardly any industry in MS compared to other states. That's what brings people back. If limited # of good jobs available, it's not going to change for the better.
I wouldn't live in the city limits if my life depended on it. I would live in a suburb: Madison, Brandon, Clinton, etc., but that's just me. Way too much crime, poverty and idiot politicians.

I'm with Goat. Jackson just needs a "consolidated downtown entertainment district." Then, the young people will start showing up in droves. They'll come to downtown Jackson for reasons they can't even fathom. They'll turn down Pearl Street, not knowing for sure why they're doing it. They'll arrive at the Consolidated Downtown Entertainment District without even thinking about it. They'll arrive as innocent as children, longing for . . . entertainment, downtown. "Of course, we won't mind if you look around," you'll say. "It's only a $20 cover to the Consolidated Downtown Entertainment District." They'll pass over the money without even thinking about it. For it is money they have and entertainment they lack.

And they'll erect homes and neighborhoods and fix the schools and the crime and the streets and the water and the corruption and the courts and the crooked politicians, all so that they can live close by the Consolidated Downtown Entertainment District. Because the one constant through all the years, has been . . . entertainment. Consolidated entertainment. Downtown. In Jackson.

One more thing! There is a man running for alderman in the upcoming election for the city of Clinton, Ms. He is pitching that the city of Clinton can and needs to succeed from Hinds County. He claims there is some old law that allows municipalities to succeed from counties or municipalities and form their own taxing districts. He claims the citizens of Clinton are paying too much taxes to Hinds county for return of services. Crazy! I hope he can pull it off but I am highly doubtful.

I read the article. Know what you're talkling about. It's not going to happen in Jackson, MS without a major miracle happening. A lot of people invested into Farish Street back in the day (family still has a stake in that). It's not tenable now and will not be unless a huge culture shift happens, as others have said. I would love to be wrong. We can't even have a parade without 8 shootings and it's the 3rd time in the last 4 years that has happened (maybe 2nd time in 3 years, could be wrong). People do love urban areas, but people do not feel safe in Jackson and they have a very long ways to go to make anyone feel differently about that.
Agree with what you're saying but to be fair I don't think the parade had anything to do with the shooting. The parade had been over for hours and the shooting occurred near the daquiri spot that seems to have multiple shootings a year. Early reports are that it could have been a revenge killing. And the shooting that happened 2 years ago was a DV situation that strangers got involved in.

The victim had a longer "rap sheet" than the perp. I doubt that either was out celebrating being Irish.

When I was living there and single, I actually liked the bars in Jackson, but it was a pain in the *** to drink and bar hop at Fenian’s, George St, F Jones, Martin’s, Underground 119, and, dare I say, Club Magoo’s. You’re getting some walkable options in Fondren now, but that’s the type of thing that’s appealing.

Everyone has the right to succeed, whether or not they attain success is up to them. Secession however, is another matter.

No telling how much suburban white boy blood shed I've seen out there on that brown cracked up pavement between the tavern and West Street.

But correct on the bar hopping. Have to drive everywhere. I think the best place for all this is right around Hal and Mal's, even better if the One Lake thing ever got going. But even that area is weird, can't really have bars to the north or west, so have to go south.

I’m like you, Anon1728, I lived in Jxn in the 70s, 80s, and early 9s. Had my car stolen twice and my pawinlaw’s Buick stolen and burned. Disgusting! I even worked for the city for a short while, but couldn’t tolerate the blatant racism. Sadly, I don’t think it has changed. All we can do for them now is to pray.

He probably won't secede in his efforts.

What? One of the crew didn’t draw the short straw to be the DD or known DDD (this isn’t an endorsement)?

There were 2 killed at the same event in 2023

What's the difference in feeling comfortable going into Jackson to eat, but getting shot at a parade in broad daylight in Jackson ? That's the 3rd murder at the parade in 2 years
I avoid Jackson like the plague and I grew up there! There is a hell of a lot of crime that doesn’t make the news!
Jackson has no tax base and probably never will because all the businesses have left

Glad they clarified that's an amateur sketch. For a minute I thought I was looking at a long lost Picasso.

The news story that produced this sketch has so much gold in it (pun intended).

Classic. I remember this being one of the first viral video song remix that kept getting circulated around.
