So, interesting point on Nebraska and Rhule. The XM college football guys were doing a stock up, stock down segment today. They called out Rhule for his stock being down. The reason is that he had Nebraska at 5-3 after eight games this season. He needed to coach them to just one more win in their final four games to have Nebraska make a bowl for the first time since 2016. Unfortunately, they finished 0-4 with losses to Sparty, MD, Wisconsin, and Iowa. They also pointed to the 3 point loss to Minny to open the season as a bad game. Nebraska finished 5-7 and 3-6 in conference. They also made it a point to say Rhule makes $9 million/yr.

Saw Aaron Rodgers on the Pat McAfee show today . He said today there’s too much of a rush to create a hero or vilify someone . Said CJ might be really good , but who knows what year two brings . Once teams have film on him , Stroud is going to have to reinvent himself . Bryce Young might be great but he’s dead and buried in many articles . Went on to say it’s ridiculous Frank Reich got fired already . Guys a great coach .
I’m sure this extends to Rhule . One year in is too early to call him a bust .

I was shocked when doing research that Nebraska’s recruiting classes the four years prior to Ruhle arriving were most ranked in the 17-25 range. Class of 23 was ranked 39 but that’s an outlier. No idea who is or isn’t still on the roster, but they should be better than 5-7.

Improvement just got harder. No West schedule in the future, although they didn't get drilled in '24.

I agree (although I could do without Rodgers, his schtick has gotten old). Just passing along the info I heard today. However, as VaDave said, the schedule just got harder for them and he’s getting paid $9 million/ yr, so patience might be hard to find in year 2 and 3 in Lincoln if the results aren’t better.

Winning can become a habit. Unfortunately, losing can as well. Nebraska seems to have a talent for creating loses. I think Rhule will overcome that in time.

Perhaps you've stumbled onto something. I learned to enjoy PSU football when I realized they weren't going to ask me to suit up for the games. Ever!

I can’t make any sense of how that’s a response to what I said. Also, I still have all my eligibility, just sitting by the phone, patiently waiting.

I remember Minnesota's last natty like it was a century ago.
Sixty years ago. Then Murray Warmath retired, the recruiting pipeline to Western PA (particularly Uniontown) dried up, and the rest is history. Now the Gophs are left with PJ and his human life preserver.

I agree Rhule has a good track record of resurrecting and fixing programs if you give him time. Especially if you look at their starting roster. They were starting a ton of underclassmen. IIRC they graduate 2 seniors on offense and 3 on defense. I am sure like he did at Temple and Baylor told the administration to be patient, they will take their lumps the first year but will take large steps up after that.

That’s because they keep dummying down the standard. NY6 is meaningless when the top 4 teams are excluded.
So, does that mean before the playoff era the only bowl that mattered was the national championship game? Are all of Penn State’s bowl wins from the past meaningless? I seem to remember a lot being made of how many bowls Paterno won at PSU. Does that not mean anything if they were not for a national championship?

in the past there were 4 NY bowls: Rose, Sugar, Orange, and Cotton. The Fiesta Bowl became a player when the moved to NYD and the Cotton lost prestige when the SWC collapsed. Making the big 4 was an accomplish. Being in a bowl game had some meaning as there were fewer bowls, a team could finish 7-4 and be left out.

Today there are essentially 8 NY bowls so yes, the standard is lower. Teams with 5-7 go to bowl games today.

Paterno’s 94 Rose Bowl win was a greater accomplishment than Franklin’s ‘23 Rose Bowl win. Paterno had to win the conference to go. Franklin backed into the game because two better conference teams went to the playoff. By 1994 standards, 2023 PSU would have been in the Citrus bowl at worst.

Roll it back before the BCS and the major bowls, occasionally more than one, had national title implications. Granted it was messy, but messy could be fun.
