Politics with DKR. Big donors and pols didn’t want them. And there was genuine racism amongst the players then in Texas. Jerry Levias talked about how badly he was treated at SMU. Truth be told, the SWC wasn’t ready for black players until the 70’s. Recall that Texas schools K-12 didn’t start integrating until 1972 or so. Just part of reality at the time. As the article said, DKR coached an integrated team at UDub. DKR always said he wish he’d done more sooner, but he wasn’t Bull Connor either.
