The cost to compete these days

Is a NIL cap legal?

I don't see how it would be illegal, but don't see any way one could be implemented in the current setting. 100% of schools would have to agree to a limit and all abide by the agreement. That, of course would never happen.

As this all moves towards the pro model, I could see ending up at some kind bargaining agreement, with a cap coming into play, maybe. But, as it stands now, there's no way to implement one, short of a gentleman's agreement.

I believe we SC fans need to lower our expectations and goals of what can be accomplished. Winning the national championship or SEC is unrealistic. Maybe even making the playoffs is unrealistic. Lower the expectations and then we save ourselves lots of frustration.

SOS always said it was easier to win the national championship than to win the SEC.

Don't expect it but hope for that ''lightning in a bottle'' year to occur is easier on the heart and soul.

Gamecock fans need to realize that we live in a relatively small state and share that state with a national football power that is a national brand name (Clemson). And we are at maximum a mere 6 hour drive from traditional national powers Georgia, Tennessee and Florida. To think we could bring in great, great recruiting classes is a "pipe dream". With NIL, it is now even more difficult. And if the cap on how many players you can have on scholarship is lifted, THAT will NOT be to our advantage. Our best hope is to have a Head Football Coach who can overachieve with the hand he has to play. Lets hope Shane has that ability.

The school using their revenue shared money will be used to recruit in the future. NIL will be used like it’s supposed to when that happens. I don’t think small states can compete without that being the case.

If that’s the case, make W-B smaller bc fans with no hope will take themselves and their money elsewhere.

I don't think annual Top 20 national ranking is bad. I'm saying that is realistic. Yes shoot for all the marbles; definitely do that. But failing to win the NC and the SEC is not something to feel dejected over. In all likelihood we will never attain those. As long as we are a Top 20 program that is good enough for me. If I was given an option between being an annual Top 20 program but, never winning the SEC nor NC or rolling the dice for all the marbles, I'd take the former. But, that's me.

When people like the ex Nike CEO are pouring hundreds of millions of dollars into NIL for Oregon, have to be realistic. Who do we have with such deep pockets to pour money into NIL for us?

I know. I was going by the maximum distance, I think that is Gainesville.

I don't think our fans realize how difficult it is to recruit to this school. Our fans ought to ask themselves how is it that Head Coaches who had great reputations for being superb recruiters fail miserably here. Hopefully Beamer proves to be a great coach. We certainly want to recruit the best we can. But if Beamer fails, I hope the hiring authorities here bring in a Head Coach whose reputation is more about getting the most out of the talent on hand. Lets face it, there are no billionaire, even millionaire alumni who are going to fund Garnet Trust NIL. What then? All you can do is hire a Head Coach who "can do more with less". Hopefully Shane Beamer has that talent. Certainly this year's schedule will give Beamer the chance to prove he has that talent. It should be an interesting eye opening season.

Top programs are reportedly allocating $6-$8 million just for the 2025 recruiting class.

We simply cannot compete in that space. Maybe these numbers explain our weak, and weakening, 2025 class.

Like everything else these days, it's all about the money.
There used to be some elements of emotion involved like loyalty, honor, pride, etc., but things have changed and not for the good

Wow, the "woe is us" is thick in here!

I wonder if Auburn fans are as depressed as we are.
No, because Auburn has had previous success, won SEC championships and national championships. We have not and it's a hard line to cross in many ways.

I'm not sure why many seem surprised by this and why many were ecstatic about NIL and the transfer portal to begin with. I remember fans declaring that NIL and the portal would certainly make college football and other sports much more balanced across the board and that it would greatly enhance our chances of making the playoffs. I never understood their reasoning. Well, nothing has changed, well maybe for the worse, the teams with previous success will remain at the top and now there is no way to catch up with them, at least before there was a chance that with good coaching and recruiting and having players here for 4 years, that you could build a program over a few years. Now you can't because players will move on every year, it's all about chasing the big $$$
