6 out of 8 writers pick Ohio State to win the national championship this season. WTF? I know they return a lot of starters, good running game, good defense, etc, etc. But, c'mon....

I hope they get to the NC game and get their asses waxed by another SEC team yet again.

Georgia is the "in" pick from the SEC but they could easily not even make the SEC title game. Nobody else in the conference is going to be elite I don't think (unless LSU's new QB surprises.. they've got the players everywhere else). Nobody from the ACC is national-title caliber as far as I can tell. West Virginia will be good but who knows just how good. Oklahoma is gonna be fantastic. Texas will be good but not good enough to overcome Mack Brown. And USC will be in the hunt as always.

I'm thinking both Oklahoma and SC are gonna be better than anybody in the SEC this year... I don't know about Ohio State, but I do know that Beanie Wells is gonna either win the Heisman or finish 2nd. Dude is beastly.

Even if OSU blows it against USC, it is still plausible that they win out the rest of their suck *** schedule and creep into the NC game again. Although if they do end up facing Georgia, it would be funny to see them lose to three different SEC teams, the Bills of the NCAA!

By picking Ohio State, they know they have a good chance of at least having their pick make it to the championship game because of their joke of a conference. Like someone else said, if they pick UGA, they could end up looking bad when they don't even win their division.

but the SEC is 4-0 in national title games under the current format, right? And only the last two have been aGAINST Ohio State.

Florida lost to Nebraska in 1996. Since then Florida beat FSU, Tennessee beat FSU, LSU beat Oklahoma, Florida beat Ohio State, and LSU beat Ohio State. And the only game that was close was Tennessee/FSU in 1998.

Mack Brown has won at least 10 games the past 7 seasons and is 103-25 overall at Texas, plus a NC. He has the best winning percentage (.805) of ANY coach in Texas history.

I stand corrected. Although it likely is a case of SEC dominance, I also like to think at least some small part of it is Ohio State futility. I'm married to a Michigan fan (who, by the way, has been converted to a Bulldog fan as well), so I have extra incentive to hate Ohio State. It was hard to watch the Florida/Michigan bowl game last year because my mind is hard-wired to pull for any SEC team in a bowl game. She hasn't quite converted me reciprically to the point to get me to root against the SEC, although I do pull for the Wolverines against other Big 10 teams, especially Ohio State. On the plus side, if I ever ever gets on a rant about Michigan, all I have to do is mention the Michigan/Appalachian State football game from last year. She knows better than to bring up things like Maine, etc., in return because I'm so used to it from my years of being an MSU fan.

They've won more BCS bowl games (4, tied with LSU) than anyone except Southern Cal (5). They're 1-2 in BCS national championship games. They have a relatively easy path to the title game (USC plus a Big 11 schedule and they could make it with 1 loss). They made it to the title game last year in what was supposed to be a rebuilding year. And they return 19 starters from that team.

from being the biggest underachiever in college football coaching. With the talent he consistently brings in, there's no reason they should lose as many big games as they do. Playing in the Big12 with those slugs, he can't not win 10 games every year. And he's still Bob Stoops' *****. To me he's Phil Fulmer 2.0.. they both find a way to do less with more than anybody. He just plays in an easier conference. To be clear, they're both good coaches but that is all they are.. good.

and as for Vince Young....almost every great team has a star. Steve Spurrier is one Danny Wuerful away from being the biggest underacheiver under that theory.

I mean games they had no business winning. Just like the Rose Bowl. That was all Vince Young. Despite all the talent he always has, it basically took Superman for him to win a national title. He only has ONE Big 12 title (thanks Vince). I think Stoops has him 4-1 in Big 12 titles. There's no way that should be happening. Would Spurrier be so highly regarded if he had only won one SEC title? Would Pete Carroll be Pete Carroll if he had one Pac-10 title?

if he hadn't won those titles. He has a ton of talent as well. Someone has to lose.

Richt has had tons of talent and hasn't been in the title game but he's still a good coach.

And again, Brown won at UNC.

but somebody that wins 10 games a year and a NC is not an underachiever in my book. Is Tressell an underachiever too?

but Spurrier (at UF), Carroll, Tressell, Stoops all dominate in their conference. Stoops to a lesser extent but still he has 5 conference titles and a NC in Norman in 9 years. Pete Carroll has 6 Pac-10 titles and 2 NCs in 7 years at SC. Tressel has 4 Big 11 Titles and a NC in 7 years at OSU. Mack Brown has 1 Big 12 title and 1 NC in 10 years at Texas (Thanks Vince) and Stoops beats him pretty consistently (6-3 I believe). Texas is Texas. The only schools that gets players as good as Texas consistently is USC. He should have more hardware than he does. That's all I'm saying.

you have to point to Bob Stoops as the sole evidence that Mack Brown isn't that good of a coach shows how weak the argument is. I'll give you that. Bob Stoops is probably a better coach than Mack Brown.

There is no way that TX has to overcome Mack Brown year in and year out to do what they do.

Hyped up all pre-season. Over-rated all season. Beaten silly in the post season. Ranked in the top 5 the next season. Wash, rinse, repeat.

(who many proclaim to be overrated as well.. though I don't). They don't have to overcome Mack Brown year after to year to do what they do.. namely be Bob Stoops' ***** and NOT win the conference despite being the most talented team pretty much every year... that's what they're doing now.
If you have elite level talent and you don't consistently produce elite-level results, something is wrong. If Saban doesn't produce an SEC title in 10 years.. hell what am I saying? He won't last 10 years if he hasn't won an SEC title in the next 5-7. Elite programs shouldn't win one conference title in 10 years unless it's a down cycle and Texas hasn't had a down cycle (coaching change, probation, etc.). They just don't come through in the big games consistently enough (Vince Young notwithstanding) despite always having as much talent as anyone in the country. The SEC is the only exception bc there can be as many as 6 elite level programs at any given time.

But like Georgia, I just can't see them running through their schedule and making the national championship.

Youngstown State
Ohio
@ USC
Troy
Minnesota
@ Wisconsin
Purdue
@ Michigan State
Penn State
@ Northwestern
@ Illinois
Michigan

Penn State would be a lot tougher in State College, but getting through USC, Wisconsin, Michigan State, and Illinois all away from home will be very difficult. If somehow they do manage to run the table or even get by with just one loss, they'll be more deserving of a spot in the title game than they have the past two years.

I'll tell you what I would like to see- Southern Cal against one of the better teams in the SEC like Florida, Georgia, or LSU for the NC.

Ohio State benefits from their schedule more than anything.

or more talent than Texas. In fact, in 03-06, Oklahoma is ranked ahead of TX in recruiting 3 of the 4 years (TX was 15,10,20 and 5 on rivals). And on 2005 NFL training camp rosters, Texas was 6th in the Big 12 in number of players.

So I think you are overrating the talent that Mack Brown has brought in. Its not as good as what Oklahoma is bringing in. And frankly, its in line with what most big time programs are bringing in. 10 wins a year is hard to argue with, particularly when coupled with a national title.

but according to Scout their average class ranking over that time is a little over 8. So basically they have a top 10 class every year. Over that same span, OU's is slightly lower.. between 9 and 10. That means they both have talent stockpiled year after year. Yet OU's on-field success has been much greater (5 conference titles vs. only one and a NC for each).
And by the way, average class rankings over the past 4 years, Texas a little over 8.. and OU somewhere around 13.

I've already said Oklahoma is a better program with a better coach. They are both bringing in about the same type of talent (and even that is debatable). And seeing as how they are in the same division, it makes it pretty tough for Texas to win too many conf. titles. But you are trying to paint a picture as if TX has a top 5 recruiting class year in and year out.

Anybody at any program that wins 10 games a year every year is going to remain the coach at that school and is not an underacheiver.

And aGAIN, if he is such an underacheiver, how did he win so damn much at UNC?

I think the last few years have shown that nobody in the country can hang with the top-tier SEC schools. FL and GA may be the best 2 teams in the country.

and he was in the ACC before Miami, VT, and BC joined. Hell somebody had to finish 2nd and 3rd behind FSU every year. Not a lot of powerhouse schools in ACC football. OK so he doesn't have a top 5 class every year but it's about top 8 on average and thats probably better than anybody not named USC.
I never said he should be fired. I just said he doesn't get as much out of all that talent as he should. Colorado, Kansas State, and aTm all have as many conference titles as he does. That shouldn't be.
