It is casting for the tv show that is the ESPN Invitational Post Season College Football Tournament, it isn't a real football playoff.
I've been saying this for many years, since the BCS days, but no one wants to admit it. The best solution, in my opinion, would be to have 8 12 team conferences all geographically homogenous. Let each conference decide how they wanted to determine their conference champion and have all 8 conference champions play in a three round playoff to determine an actual national champion. Have no committee or computer rankings or polls to determine who plays for the championship. The national championship would be decided by actual play on the field. Finally, someone is paying attention.
This is a money-making event, not an organic competition. It was the same with the BCS (because that's who owns the CFP - BCS Properties, LLC) and the 4-team version. It's an invitational, much like a concert where the acts are arranged ahead of time with a promoter. They pick who performs because they're in it to make (lots of) money. They throw some stipulations in there to allow "conference champs" in and one little guy to make it look merit-based, but they have so much wiggle room within the system that they can still get what they want arranged for a final product.
