If it were up to me, I would play Jackson State every year over the other in-state SWAC schools just for the crowd they will bring. Valley might bring 1000 fans.

Really surprised me. I thought they would have brought a lot. I think we're setting up a pretty good rotation. JSU, Alcorn, out of state, JSU, Valley, out of state, repeat. I'd rather move the out of state games to every other year instead of every third year, but that's pretty close.

Don't get me wrong, playing in the SEC is already difficult. The additions will be more challenging whenever those teams join the schedule. Without knowing the ins and outs of whether we're looking at 9 league games or not, at what point do we worry aboutstrength of scheduleas it pertains to the BCS? If we're truly setting our eyes on the big prize, should we be concerned about too many patsies in 1 season cause to be honest, it would pretty much require an undefeated season to have a shot with the non conference opponents we keep bringing in. Not saying we need to go out and schedule Oregon, Oklahoma, etc. I'm just pondering at what point in the program's tenure do we start exploring a little tougher out of conference slate with the big prize in mind? Hopefully the conference expansion will allow this to work itself out but I have to be honest, it's getting tough to pay ticket money, gas money, etc to drive to Starkville to watch 2 or 3 patsies every year.

in our recruiting. We NEED to win our OOC games to make sure we keep winning seasons going. We still don't have enough overall talent on the roster to secure winning records within the conference. We were outmanned the other night against LSU and Bama will likely be the same way. Everyone else we can compete with but most still have more overall talent. Once we start pulling in more 4 and 5 star type players THEN I wouldn't have a problem with us playing some tougher OOC games. When you are getting primarily 2 and 3 star guys which we are still doing even recruiting year you can only develop and coach them up so far.

Bottom line is if we win the SEC, we will be fine as far as the BCS is concerned.

Unless we schedule two I-AA teams, then I would say we need to upgrade.

Unless something changes in the SEC, we're always going to have to run the gauntlet in conference and even with OOC patsies, our strength of schedule will always be good enough that it will help, not hurt, our chances in the event the unthinkable happens and we're in consideration for the title game or an at large BCS spot.

I think it's also a money issue. If we can pay one of the Mississippi schools $300k, that's a cheap buy game that allows MSU to make a healthy profit. Could be wrong, but I'm not sure we can keep 7 home games (at least in the future; thanks again Lonnie), schedule better OOC competition, and make the money we need to make off of our home games.

If it would work economically and schedule wise, I'd like to start playing a bunch of 2-1's with CUSA schools.Still not the most exciting OOC slate, but having a steady diet of awaygames in Memphis,Birmingham, New Orleans, and Houston isn't too bad. </p>

never. It doesn't matter unless you are vying for the BCS title. After that, we need all the wins we can get.

I know fans are attending them because of the last 11 sell-outs but I only come over for the SEC games and, unless it's a night game I don't even watch them live but wait for the DVR option .... we could upgrade somewhat and since it is scheduled at least 2 years in advance we need to do it now

Go undefeated in the SEC, go to the title game. I see no reason to add another BCS school in our non-con.

SOS used to be one of the components of the BCS formula. It's not anymore. Sure, your SOS will affect your ranking in the computer ratings, andto some extent how much respect you get in the human polls. But there's no longer a SOS component, so there's no longer a direct influence.

Bottom line: If you win the SEC, your SOS is taken care of. There's no reason to schedule any tougher than we already have to.

We`ve done this twice lately and the coaches end up getting suprised in our second game(which is usually an SEC game) because our first opponent wasn`t strong enoughto expose any weaknesses thatwe needed to work on.

And even still, SOS only comes into play if you're one of 3 undefeated teams, or if you're one of a handful of 1 loss teams vying for the final BCS title game spots.

The odds, even if you're an Alabama, of that coming into play in any given season are slim. If you're not an Alabama or Ohio State, the odds are even slimmer that SOS will come into play.

I agree with the way you're scheduling going forward. I am pissed that we're playing Texas in 2012 and 2013. I'm not happy about Boise in 2014. I'm not happy about Clemson in 2015 and 2016. I'm less pissed about Boise than the others, because 1) it's possible Petersen may take another job by then, and 2) it looks like it may be one of those Chick-fil-A kickoff games, and that exposure helps balance out the potential damage of a tough OOC game.

Stricklin gets it when it comes to scheduling. He's got you slated for cupcake city for the coming years. The only issue I see at all with your scheduling in the near future is the USM home and home. That was just plain dumb. I know that was Byrne's doing, and he just didn't get it. I think Stricklin gets it, and the USM thing won't happen again.

and had a lot to do with who our next governor will be and which school he graduated from. I don't mind playing them rarely, but I would have offered them a 2-for-1, take it or leave it.

I was wondering, do we have two FCS opponents scheduled next year? Jackson State to open and then isn't South Alabama FCS too? I know we gave Ole Miss hell for that a few years ago. Or am I wrong about South Alabama. I know they were killing their schedule until they lost their first game recently so maybe they are getting bumped up to FBS and maybe I just missed it. Link for scheduled games so far.

I have no problem scheduling one cupcake FCS game per year but two is just awful to me.

I wish the NCAA would not allow any win over a FCS to count for bowl eligibility. But once again... They want the money trickling down so.......we get to see UT-Martin. What a game that will be.

Plus it gives us a chance to get some playing time for some younger players to give them a little experience.

It was based off of the Charlie Foxtrot that was the USM/Jackson State game.

The MSU/JSU game three years ago won me over, as well as the Alcorn MSU football game. The fans for both schools behaved well. My theory is that their "casual" fans weren't able to buy tickets at the window, and thus we only got the upper crust of their fanbases. That's my theory- might be wrong. I think it's good for Mississippi personally. The fact of the matter is we are proclaiming ourselves to be Mississippi's school and Mississippi's football team. The way we do that is to beat the in state teams and also to help out the smaller/weaker teams in the state.

Back to the SWAC games for a second- I really enjoyed seeing their fans- and the ones that do come are the diehards- come over to MSU and take it all in and relish in the fact that they are finally playing a SEC team, an in state SEC team, and MSU. It's huge for them and their school- they don't care about the fact that they are about to get beat 56-0. To me, that's what I really get the most out of it- how appreciative their fans are. We almost single handedly support their athletic program for a year as well. And the players have to love the fact that they are getting to play a SEC school as well and in a SEC stadium- heck, I would bet that the Vet in Jackson is one of the nicer stadiums in the SWAC for reference. Obviously, these are the weaker teams.

As far as the stronger teams- to be the king, you have to beat your competition. Just like the Romans. We play Ole Miss every year. We have beaten them the past two seasons and three out of the last four. Check. Now as far as USM,I think we would look, well, scared, if we played every in state SWAC team and not USM. Personally, I don't mind playing USM. I never have- even when Bower was at his height. At the same time, I understand the arguement as to why we shouldn't play them every year, and I am not for that. I do think it would be good to play them every two-three years home and away like we are about to do. That's the best solution for all, in my opinion. I also think that MSU/USM will be good for Mississippi as well. And if we want to be the school of Mississippi, we need to show that we are not scared to play them anywhere, and also that we are going to beat them, which we will hopefully do when the time comes.

OK, now that that is out of the way- I do NOT support playing tough BCS opponents during the regular season OOC. You can say "Well, we didn't know that West Virginia and Georgia Tech were going to be so good eight years ago"- to that I say, if there is even a remote chance that they will be good, don't do it. The SEC is tough enough as it is.

I really don't get fans that are like, "Well, I only watch SEC teams, or BCS teams. La Tech is boring". To that I say, I would rather watch Michigan in Jan at the Gator Bowl versus in Starkville in Oct. These are the games where you get to see the freshmen play- which is the future of MSU, and we get to see Tony Frankln go up against Dan Mullen- two spread gurus, plus did I mention that IT'S FOOTBALL? Come on people.

The thing is, people will complain when we aren't any good, but the fact of the matter is, to be good, you have to build, and you do that by going to bowls. That's at least part of it. These "easy" games allow us to build depth, and they allow us to rest people so that we can have a fighting chance against people like LSU, Alabama, and all of the other "non-boring" games. Not to mention the extra bowl practices and the exposure from going to a bowl. If we keep going to bowls, we will recruit better, and we will get better players. These "easy" games also allow our players to build confidence in themselves.
