This is what good coaches do

Not true at all. This is what coaches do to extend their careers. Is the team better next week because of this? No. It's an outward show of change, that doesn't actually change anything in the present - because if there was a better play caller on the staff you can always switch duties.

This is throwing in the towel, but letting the fans know, things will be different next season (whatever that may mean).

If coaches don't let fans (and players) know things will be different next year a lot of bad things happen. Players transfer, recruits decommit, ticket sales and attendance drop, etc. - It's a move good coaches have to make to remove poison from the culture they have started to build. Bad coaches maintain status quo and become the poison themselves.

It also establishes a line of accountability to existing and future assistants. As they say, the definition of a fool is doing the same thing over and over expecting a different result.

Yeah, midseason firings are more about perception and less about generating results right now. I would not be in favor of us firing anyone midseason. I hope Shane has already made that decision in his mind, though.

Yes. And has at least privately let players and recruits know things are going to change before they start to bail. I agree with waiting until after the regular season but before the bowl game - take advantage of extra practice time.
