Modern baseball is such a train wreck. If yall want it to be all about homeruns just bring back the steroids.

Comparing Jake to the rest of the Rays outfield, I honestly don't know what they see in the other guys. Far lower BA and not much power either to make up for it.

Jake should go to Japan and play.

They appreciate contact hitters with good average and ob%.

They could just be messing around with his service time to retain control of him longer…. I highly doubt that is the case but it’s not uncommon for teams to delay calling up guys with no MLB service time after a certain date to keep the player from reaching free agency an additional year.

Guess that means that the organization makes more money off a home run hitter with a .188 average than they do off of .429 hitter without much power. That’s the only logical conclusion. Nothing else would make this make sense, and it sucks for the game and for the players.

I think I'm going to make a bit of a special effort to not watch a single inning of MLB this year.

It won't be difficult.
I’m gonna watch. I’m pulling for teams that try to do things differently. The D-backs had success two seasons ago playing small ball. I’m guessing the nerds will find a new column on the spreadsheet soon and decide not swinging for home runs every AB works before too long

That’s me for the last 40 years. Used to watch the Braves on TBS, but haven’t watched an inning since the strike in 83(?). Not sure of the year.

I love magnum as much as anyone but he is just a aaaa player. You have to be really good (and usually good and young) to break into the majors.

In three seasons at tripe a Mangum has slashed .310/.353/.438 OPS.791 - 13HR, 43SB/15CS with 187 SO and 58 walks. Those are very good numbers without a doubt. But look at the minor league numbers for the guys ahead of him.

Josh Lowe (Nate’s brother) was a 1st round pick in 2016. 30 out of 30 MLB teams will give their top picks every chance to succeed due to the money invested. And in 2 seasons at triple a (with a short rehab stint last year) Lowe slashed .298/.385/.539 with an OPS of .924 - 39 HR, 51SB/2CS with 262 so and 109 walks. He has played in the majors for 3 years so those triple a numbers came when he was 23/24 vs age 26-29 seasons. It’s clear what Lowe is the on the major league roster.

Christopher Morel is in his age 25 season and went through the minors in his younger developmental years. Barely stopped in at tripe a bit in 39 games he slashed .313/.405/.647 with an OBP of 1.051 with 51 SO and 21 walks at age 22-23. He’s definitely got some swing and miss in his game at the major league level hitting .223 across three seasons but he has major league power already hitting 63 home runs. He is also a super utility guy that can play IF and OF and the Rays love that kind of player for roster versatility.

The third outfielder Jonny Deluca I honestly don’t know much about. Light hitting, drafted out of the university of Oregon in 2017. His offensive numbers across the board are pedestrian so I checked into his defensive profile and found why he is starting for the rays. In 2024 he was the 16th best major league outfielder in terms of outs above average. Go to baseball savant for a crash course on the stat but for context he was a slightly better defender than Michael Harris II and Julio Rodriguez.

So a home grown top prospect, a young international player with proven pop and a defensive wizard. The good but not great guy who is older than all three is just not going to force his way into that outfield. The minor leagues are full of guys that have major league work ethics, but just aren’t physically gifted enough to get a cup of coffee.

If he hits 20 HR and bats .191 he makes the Rays roster. What a disgrace the Rays are.
Except they also optioned Misner, and it looks like they aren’t even going to put Jimenez on the 40-man or opening day roster, either. They’re opting to hang onto Aranda, Caballero, Palacios, and Mead, and none of those guys has much power either. One of them, of course, will get sent down when Kim returns.

So the narrative that he got optioned because of no power doesn’t really hold water. They pretty much just optioned all their AAA guys back to AAA. Not very shocking. They’ll hold them in reserve until injuries hit.

None of the guys you list above were his competition for a roster spot. Of course he wasn’t going to come in and start. The incumbent guys he was competing with were Aranda and Caballero, primarily. Aranda is a platoon 1B / DH who has still been only a sub .700 OPS player for his career in spite of only getting favorable pitching matchups. He can also play 2B, but the Rays have a zillion other guys that can do that also. He just doesn’t add much value. Caballero has defensive value as a utility infielder, but again not much offense. He’s likely the one getting cut when Kim returns.

Jake is going to have a movie made about him and his Rays journey just like Jim Morris! He will be 37 years old when they finally call him up and it will be against the Rangers!

Roster spots & options. He'll be called up in May or early June at some point. There is no conspiracy here. It's just the Rays not wanting to lose players on their 40 man roster

Shortly after my column published, the Rays optioned Jake to Durham...
Honestly, I would support hiring Jake Magnum as our baseball coach today. He has all the tools to be successful in that position. Yes, he loves Mississippi State with all his heart but that is not the reason he would make a good coach. He is smart, tough, and relentless and above all he is a winner.

I would 100% take him as the hitting coach. Head coach I’m not 100%.

Unfortunately next man up will be Kameron Misner then Chandler Simpson, their top OF prospect. The best scenario for him right now is that due to his strong spring he gets traded out of the **** organization in Tampa that I support.
