I was spending all day getting the house and my mom's house ready for Thanksgiving....just getting around to this...

1. First time to Rutgers for a game. This now completes my tour of all current Big Ten Stadiums. Drove 20 minutes to the train station, caught train to New Brunswick (25 minutes) and then shuttle to the stadium (about 10 minutes). Most convenient trip ever for a PSU game. Only downside is I had to sit near a guy who insisted on not using his headphones so he could listen to his music on his phone. That is really effing annoying.

2. The stadium is actually not that bad. About half the size of the Beav. Great sight lines. Rutgers did a "Rutgers Boardwalk" theme - not sure if it's there every week, but this is what you have to do when you can't field a highly competetive team. They had food trucks, a couple of rides for kids, beer tents. The only thing really missing was "Watch the Tram Car Please" announcements. It was a pretty good idea on their part. Got to talk to a nice PSU couple from Richmond who made the trip. Not one RU fan, young or old, said anything negative to me or anyone else I saw. I fully expected some crap from someone. But...nothing. Inside or outside the stadium.

3. Give Rutgers credit in the first quarter. They really did play with spirit. Not sure why PSU seemed to sleep walk in the first quarter, with the exception of a couple of big plays. Sometimes, games go like that.

4. The Rutgers QB has absolutely no touch on his long passes. None. Slats and crossing patterns - the kid is pretty good. But ask him to pinpoint the ball on a deep route, and he is toast.

5. Defensively, Diaz again played a soft middle in the first quarter. Not really sure why he keeps relying on that. IF Rutgers had a slight better offensive line, they would have made more hay on passes in the middle. Offensively, I don't really think Yurcich called a good game early on. I did not get the impression he was really pushing the offensive to be aggressive. That said, Rutgers defensive secondary was tight.

6. Defensively- only 9 yards given up in the 2nd quarter - that is amazing. No matter who you play. Carter is starting to really push to develop and I would be hard pressed to believe he should not be on the Freshman All American team. He should certainly be pre-season All Big Ten next year. It was good that the defensive picked up where the offense could not, at first. Kobe King has really come on the last few games. The secondary of PSU also played really tight. Linebackers were flying to the ball, and D-line held their own after the first quarter. Assuming Diaz comes back next year, he will have some great talent to work with and develop. I do think he comes back for at least one year.

7. To me, the turning point of the game was Amor's long punt which required Rutgers to start on their own 1 yard line. Up until then, a good portion of the game had been played leaning towards the PSU side of the field. (Big plays not withstanding). Dixon's pick and the subsequent TD really put Rutgers in a hole at 21-10.

8. I went to the concourse at halftime, and there was a line of cars leaving the stadium. I asked one guy why and he said this is typical for Rutgers fans - they know their team does not have the talent and depth for the second half. He was correct.

9. Weirdly enough, Rutgers does some light and smoke show during halftime, when the punters and kickers are warming up - so they warm up in the dark.

10. Even at 28-10, I did not really feel PSU had control of the game. They controlled the score, but not the game.

11. The second half was just a bloodbath. Rutgers really had nothing to offer to withstand PSU. They don't have the talent, or depth. But, to the credit of their defense, they did hold off PSU a couple of times near the end zone forcing FGs and not TDs. I was impressed with their effort at the goal line.

12. Congrats to the Rutgers punter - breaking two NCAA records in one game against PSU. I guess we will be the answer to a trivia question.

13. The game was to be a sellout, but some guy behind me said that Rutgers gave away a bunch of tickets to high schools, but hardly anyone showed up. I thought it was about 75% full at kick. By the end of the game, it was only PSU fans, the Rutgers band and parents of Rutgers players. Even from my seat in the upper level, I could hear the Rutgers defense calling out signals.

14. Someone teach Drew Allar to slide. Please.

15. All in all, it was a big win, although for most of the game, it did not feel like PSU really controlled things.

16. 9-2 and a chance for 10 wins next week. Who would have thought? I do think PSU was both helped and hurt by the conference schedule. Having the two toughest teams so close to each other, while having a weak opening and weak ending to the schedule makes people not really appreciate this team is pretty good. If the schedule had been different with either OSU or Michigan later in the season, PSU might have been able to work out some kinks, especially with a new defensive coordinator, and perhaps one of those games turns out differently. But you get what you get.

17. I will assume Manny Diaz's hair did not move in the wind.

Enjoyable takes as usual, thanks.

I’m with you in feeling like Manny Diaz may stick with us another year. I’m hoping he’s eager to see what he can achieve with this pool of talent now that he’s been working with them for a full year.

I’m just an inch shorter than Drew Allar, and — were I young and athletic enough to be a QB — I could envision myself not wanting to make the journey all the way to the ground to slide, either. I really hope the tendency does not get him hurt though.

I didn’t go to the PSU game, but attended the Indiana - Rutgers game on October 22nd.

they had the boardwalk thing - band, Ferris wheel, boardwalk games etc - I thought it was pretty cool environment.

The huge difference between Beaver and SHI stadium was the variety of food and beer available. Some of the Food stands were catered or managed by New Brunswick area restaurants - the food was decent - street tacos, pork roll and egg sandwiches, sausage / pepper sandwiches, Jersey mikes etc.

Beer - huge variety - everything from mass market brewers (Bud / Ultra/ Heineken ) to craft IPA’s. Between the food and beer options and number of vendors line wait was never over 5 minutes.

I talked a co-worker into making these at his UK tailgate last week (pork roll, egg, and cheese). Said they were a huge hit. That used to be my go to 3AM meal in my early 20s, often with a side of cheese fries and gravy. I got really fat.

Was Uber’ing my kids around most of Saturday so missed the game. Watching now - what did everyone think of all the Rutgers injuries in the first half (particularly as we were running hurry up)? I don’t want to be a Ferentz, but seemed pretty convenient…..did any of these guys have to stay out the rest of the game?

Good take, I had the exact same experience. Fans were pretty nice to me.

I drove from MA and stayed in East Brunswick, so not far away from campus and the stadium, which is not on campus. But my God I forgot how bad it is to get around in NNJ.

What's interesting is that I thought the game day environment for not being on campus had a very good vibe. Nice setup for tailgating. Stage set up for a pep rally. And the team buses stopped at the rally for a minute on their way into the stadium which was pretty cool.

The whole thing kinda shoots holes in the "Heinz Field is the reason Pitt has no game day vibe" mantra.

Stadium parking was by pre-paid pass only, so I ended up parking just two or three blocks away in someone's yard for $20.

Got to speak with Mike Mauti for a minute at a tailgate. Really good dude. I thanked him for his leadership in holding the team together when the **** hit the fan.

Oh, and they did this funny thing during one of the timeouts where they put up celebrity pictures on the scoreboard and the cameramen found people in the stands who looked like the celebrity.

They put up Snooki. Literally half the student body looks like Snooki.

If you do that trip again and you are close to Boston you can take the Acela to NYC and then switch to NJ Transit to New Brunswick. The shuttle to the stadium is a 1 minute walk after you get off the train.

You can always plan it it to stay at a hotel near EWR. The NJTransit trains stop there It’s a 25 minute trip from nyc to ewr and about the same to NB.

Or fly to ewr. I agree that NNJ traffic can be extremely bad.

10. Agree. Even up 18 it just didn't "feel" like we were in control of the game. However, the point I did feel like we were in control was Rutgres Last drive of the 2nd half: just over a minute left and 2 TOs and they didn't even try to get something going. No hurry up, no sense of urgency. Even after getting a first down out around their 40...zip.

it was almost like they were of the mindset "we know we're not scoring 18 more points today, so let's just go through the motions." They really looked defeated at that point, at least on O. Granted they had the big play to start the 3rd quarter, but followed it up with 3 straight bad plays resulting in another PSU defensive TD.

A few other things I'll add... I was fortunate to have seats in the 4th row behind the bench so it was interesting to see some of the interactions:

Was fun to see who everyone hung with. The TE room is tight. Those guys were hanging and talking the entire game when the D was on the field.

#10 & #13 are definitely boys, despite their competition for snaps. When Allen bulled his way into the EZ on that run, Singleton met him before he was even off the field. After the play the two of them were talking on the bench about it and definitely enjoying each other.

Trautwein was coaching up the OL literally after every possession with a white board talking blocking assignments, etc.

Guy in front of me had an Allar shirt on. It occurred to me that the kids on the field must be p$yched to see that.

And just for fun, look at the height differential between Tank and Fitzgerald.

18 - I've been going to Beaver Stadium for a long time and the older I get and the more stadiums I go to (i.e. Auburn, etc), the more I realize Beaver Stadium is just probably the worst one around when it comes to "spectator comfort". The bench seating with no room for your legs and the fact that you have to stand and rotate awkwardly to let someone get by is really getting on my nerves. I know there is an chair back option in the upper south end zone (and I actually like the end zone view), but those seats are really high and far from the field. I am all for a major remodel with individual chair backs everywhere in the stadium (except student section). Doubt I'll see it in the next 10 years.

19 - I thought the same thing. Admittedly, only 2 games left, but if one of those guys gets an ACL during the garbage time against Rutgers or (hopefully) a blow out against MSU ... ugh, that changes the outlook for 2023.

Not all of the seats in SHI have back supports. I'd estimate that 30-40% don't, notably the student and the designated visitors' sections. Even then, I've never felt particularly crowded. Might have something to do with attendance numbers.

Read on the Rutgers board that Schiano got in Clifford's face while leaving the field at halftime. They said Clifford was entering the tunnel out of turn. (yes, another tunnel issue). Not sure if that's real or not. Curious if any of you at the game saw that.

On TV, they showed Schiano jawing with the officials about the offsides on the punt before entering the tunnel. Didn't notice any interaction with Clifford.

Clifford ran off towards the tunnel after taking a knee to end the first half. A couple of refs got in his way to stop him, and let the RU team get into the tunnel first. The PSU team was held back. I did not see Schiano getting in Clifford's face. I did notice that the 20 minute halftime clock in the stadium did not start until the coaches were done with their interviews and both teams were out of sight within the tunnel.

There was something after the game...

...if Mark Brennan spinning around like a top does not make you dizzy....go to about 1:35 and watch for a bit. It appears Johnny Dixon and Max Melton were having some words....

a testament to the Rutgers offensive futility during his time, he certainly earned them the hard way
