Based on our travels, I’d love to be In either the Chianti region of Italy between San Gimignano/Poggibonsi/Greve in Chianti, Anacapri or the southern Bavaria/northern Austria area near the Zugspitze (Garmisch/Innsbruck, greater norther Tyrol area).

Wife has been working on the idea of getting dual citizenship (Mexico) so we can buy her grandfather’s land just outside of Hermosillo, Sonora. I think she has a thought of retiring there, or at least having a place there.

Stateside????? Give me a cabin near a trout stream in western NC from Boone SW to Murphy following the NC/TN border. Back in some quiet holler where no one will bother me and I can trout fish and hunt 365 days a year.
You have the western NC thing figured out. Mums the word.

Our daughter is studying abroad this semester. She has a double major in Business and French, but Smeal doesn't accept any of the credits if you take business courses there, and the business courses are in English. So she chose the program that's in French only and is finishing up her electives there. She's okay with the Parisians, but does have some funny stories. She loves cities - a bit introverted - and would like to do her internship in Paris too. The turning point for her was that once she learned to navigate the Metro, she was sold.

Some odor in the summer aside, it’s a lot better than the one in DC, which is mostly for commuting. I like that all lines are separate for the most part so if something goes down, it doesn’t kill the whole system.

I like southern Germany. I’m intrigued by New Zealand, although I’ve never been there. I have a great sense of security living in the US, as whacky as it can get sometimes. I don’t know whether I could ever pull the trigger on retirement overseas.
New Zealand well worth the trip. Spent 10 days there and 20 in Australia a few years ago. NZ one of the prettiest places on earth

Never experienced it at all as a tourist. What kind of hostility? Just disdain for Americans? Can’t be worse than Sarajevo….;). And I loved it there.
Setting up shop for a week in a hotel, you get breakfast, lunch and overnight with the same team. Out to dinner different places every night, walking the city on free days and weekends. She’s broken a lot bread with the locals, rates them as a holes. For example she has the complete opposite opinion of singaporians.

Yeah, but Singapore is the Switzerland of Asia - clean, but boring.

The wife and I are looking at the western NC area. Haven't visited the the Boone, Asheville, Hickory area but plan to do so this fall. She likes Durham NC so I'm imagining she'll like those towns. Cost of living may be a concern with all three.

In terms of over seas, Prague would be the only place we would consider. Have visited family there several times. Beautiful city, great transportation and good health care and cultural events. Reasonable cost of living relative to many other Euro cities.

I think it’s a fear of the unknown. I had that the first time I went overseas. Once you get incorporated into the local economy it’s easy. I spent 4 months in Amman, Jordan. Was super worried about integrating into the Muslim culture and getting on with daily life, and by the second week there it was just as normal as living stateside except for the aggressive driving versus the defensive driving.

If I had 30 days left to live, I would go to the South of France and live our my days there. Absolutely beautiful.

So, assuming I had more than 30 days left to live, South of France still gets my vote. And it's generally warm.

But were discussing the locals, not the scenery

Yeah, I get it. But, I couldn't live in Singapore. We have the opportunity to live overseas now in Asia and for me it would be Tokyo/Kobe or bust. I don't think the attitude or disposition of locals would influence where I would want to retire. For me, it would be doing the things I enjoy and being able to do so without much effort. The bigger issue would be being away from the kids, so probably won't happen for us. Wife does want to buy a house in Charleston, SC though, so may have to investigate...

I may have a four bedroom house available for you....with a partial wrap around porch and a two car detached garage. A friend moved there for a job (from Reading, Pa) and after 8 months, the financial backers pulled the plug on her department. So, she may be in the market to sell.

Ah - we're probably looking in the next few years (have to visit, see what's what). Also have to wait until the hole in my backyard becomes something resembling a pool....;). Thanks though!

What is that in dollars?
What is that in dollars?
As of today that would be about $350K to $430K. But, that’s for primarily new construction with high quality finishes, good location and amenities like pool and gym, and/or parking. You can find resales for less of course but the last thing I want to do is start updating or renovating a property abroad. Plus, the new stuff is definitely being built to appeal to the new aesthetic of open floor plans, lots of windows and light, etc.

Our two adult children live nearby (20 minutes and 2 minutes away, respectively), and as of now we also have three grandchildren 2 minutes away. So no to expat retirement for right now. However, my wife and I along with the children and grandchildren all have Italian citizenship, and we own a place in Italy (specifically in Calabria, in the small town where my grandfather was born). It’s idyllic and we plan to spend 3-4 months a year there.

Now if our children found jobs somewhere in the EU, we’d be there already . . .

If you want something close to Charleston but off the beaten path, check out Edisto Island. Quiet little beach town south of Charleston.

I was trying to get my sig other (of Polish descent) interested in moving somewhere like Krakow. With the “events” in Ukraine I think I’ll slow play that discussion now.

Eastern Europe is on my bucket list. From the Dalmatian coast -> east and N to the Baltic Sea. Basically the entirety of the Balkan and Baltic countries plus Romania

Recently took early retirement….but….traveled extensively prior during my career. Visited some exquisitely beautiful locales that I would re-visit in a heartbeat but would not consider living there full time. One does not fully appreciate how efficient and dependable our health system is….until….you become ill or injured in a foreign locale. Case in point….two weeks ago a good friend stayed in an very upscale condo building ( Cancun)where his wife took a tumble in the pool area . She was rushed to a nearby hospital where they refused to honor her current PPO corporate plan. She had to pay $5,000 out of pocket up front to a CT Scan of her head and another almost $1,000.00 for X-rays of her foot. She was diagnosed with a concussion and although her ankle was really bothering her they totally missed a broken bone in her foot that was found when she returned to Dallas. What I think is a great idea is to visit as you wish for vacation ….but BE VERY CAREFUL….committing long term especially if you are over 60 yrs when your chances of needing medical care increase exponentially vs the young.……IMHO

I don't know if it necessarily qualifies as international but I will likely end up splitting my time between PA and PR. We have family here and there. We love the beach and we don't want to be in a foreign land without the support of friends and family. It makes sense since PR is a commonwealth. I've got another 10 years before that will happen but I have started to practice my Spanish over the past year. It helps to have a native speaker in the house.

My cousin did a lot of homework and had narrowed it down to Costa Rico and Portugal. He was able to check all the boxes with Portugal.
Costa Rica can be a good choice. Came very close to purchasing some property there 15 years ago and it was a bargain. The idea was to rent the property for tourists and have it available for wife and I for extended stays, but not full time retirement. I have worked all over the world, and the comment about healthcare by previous poster is something to consider. the US still has some of the best healthcare, and I can compare it to experiences in Brazil, Japan, China, Germany and UK.
