That's admirable but not necessarily intelligent in terms of overall risk management. He bought into Saban's rhetoric and took the risk and it paid off. You don't always lose in Vegas.

Again, the fact that you don't understand it says all that needs to be said.

Playing with pride. Honoring commitments. I guess you're either born with it or you're not.

Understand what? That schools and coaches are hoarding money at the player's expense under the guise of "take one for the team?"

They are. When they're injured, they don't pay one red cent to be seen by doctors, have therapies, have surgeries, etc.

What would Lattimore, have received if he was insured based on future expectations? He was lucky to get bailed out by Harbaugh.

What's with all the questions about insurance?? It's as simple as Quitters (Smith) or true Fighting Gamecocks that see it all the way through (Gwyn).

If you wonder why so many opt out of bowl games, risk of injury is the primary reason. College Football is on the higher end of risky occuptions and there's been ample money to insure players and protect their future if you want them to fight to the last play. There's a big difference between a "team" building a home for the unpriveledged VERSUS rich coaches/schools signalling to players that they are quitters because they opted out of a game they had every right to opt out of.

Everyone who is frustrated with the current NIL state of affairs should look no further than the NCAA and its constituents. It was their greed for decades which set the table for what we are witnessing today.

Why didn't any of the following Gamecocks QUIT & not play their last game in a bowl??

George Rogers
Willie Scott
Brad Edwards
Sterling Sharpe
Willie Offord
Andre Goodman
Sheldon Brown
Ko Simpson
Jonathan Joseph
Fred Bennett
Sidney Rice
Jamon Meredith
Jasper Brinkley
Kenny McKinley
Jared Cook
Eric Norwood
Chris Culliver
Alshon Jeffery
Melvin Ingram
Jadeveon Clowney

I'll stop the list at 20, as there are a whole lot more. Now..........why didn't any of those guy QUIT? Bowl games are damn risky & definitely more risky when they played because equipment & field conditions weren't near as good as they are now.

There was chatter at the time that Clowney would be wise to sit out his entire junior season, and SOS has confirmed that Clowney was advised to do so. He was considered the easy #1 pick in the draft whether he played his junior year or not. Instead, he played the whole season, including the bowl game.

He wasn't a quitter. Hate it for him that Deke Adams had to be his position coach his final season.

Yep. I don't know what to say other than what I've already said. It's just a mentality. Some guys have it. Some guys don't. And you can't explain that mentality to folks who don't have that mentality (as evidenced in this thread).

Because they bought into tribalism. Again, it's admirable but not necessarily in their best interest.

I would love to see them play through to the end. However, I'm not going to cheer for them while they are helping us beat UT/Clemson, and then turn around and call them losers for not choosing to play in the bowl game.

AGREE 100%. I never understand the opt outs....even with injury. Hey...do you think you have less of a chance to get injured in NFL OFAs or training camp?? Unless they're a guaranteed top 10 overall lock who teams are fighting over... most times I think players are trying to hide something when they opt out.

Wrong. It's a mentality. If anyone in college football had made their case prior to bowl season, it's Bryce Young. Per your "logic" he had absolutely zero incentive to play in Bama's bowl game. There was absolutely nothing left for him to prove on the field in college football. It was a "meaningless" game for Bama.

Yet he was motivated to finish something he started. To go out with pride. To honor his commitment to his team and teammates.

That you don't get that says all that needs to be said.
I get it, I just don’t feel the need to label them a quitter if they don’t feel the same way. If they feel like a one month jump on training for the combine can net them more money. They by all means should be able to make that decision with our desk jockeys labeling them a quitter while excepting transfers with open arms that also opted out.

Isn't it a bit selfish to only think of yourself at the end of the season when it was players other than yourself who helped you get to whatever status you have reached? Kind of like a 1,000 yard runner taking all the credit for those yards when it was due in great part to guys blocking for him. That ****** bowl game means something to your teammates/brothers so it should mean something to you too. They had your back all year. Your turn to return the favor. One for all and all for one. GO COCKS!!!

Did all of you jokers that are calling them quitters attend the game?

Pretty certain some of you didn't attend. If not why? Financial or priority decision? Selfish or did you simply quit on your team?

I know Rod was there. How about the following? Based on post, I'm certain all of you weren't there.

You were right until you got to the “and”. It’s certainly your opinion and not fact that the players are misguided.
Misguidance is all around them. Relatives, agents, scouts, players, etc. fill their heads with ideas which may not be in their best interest.
Tough to stick to your principles and upbringing in this situation and most get distracted easily by the shiny objects.
Saban is on target with his comments.

"If a for-profit business has employees, then they are likely required to carry workers compensation insurance.[3] However, there is no coverage for college athletes.

"College athletes are not entitled to workers compensation benefits. This exception is attributed to the NCAA’s labeling of its players as student-athletes. By using this title, the NCAA defines athletes as students instead of as employees. Since athletes are not employees, they are not entitled to workers compensation benefits. This term has been used by the NCAA to defend workers compensation claims from players who have become seriously injured as a result of their sport."

If I had given money to their NIL (which I never would) and they opt out of the bowl or jump into the portal I would be pissed. Why anyone would give money to these college kids is baffling to me. Do they think by giving $$$$ it makes them part owner of the Gamecocks? Are College Coaches really the recruiters of the folks paying these players. This whole NIL thing seems WACKED to me. However, I’m all for these kids getting money but it should come from the conference or university… they need to be the one ponying up the cash because they’re the ones making the money. Case in point, the 12 team CFP have been projected to generate 2 Billion dollars, so you tell me why Joe or Jane Blow fan should be paying players. RIDICULOUS

This is at the core of the argument. Players should have been getting paid a wage and should have had workers compensation in case of injury. Instead, the NCAA used legal maneuvers and word play to deflect for years in order to funnel revenue to the top of the food chain. Now were stuck with a free-for-all that is the polar opposite of amateur athletics. It's actually worse than professional athletics at the moment with the lack of guard rails.

Hate the game, not the player.

It's all risk management at the individual level. A player has to build a portfolio so they have to assume risk to get there. Bowl games are currently optional and most scouts have made a decision about a player's talent prior to any bowl game.
"Building a portfolio" as an individual is the mindset of a very selfish player when the mindset of the group of players is to proudly build a portfolio as a team and for the school who made the opportunity to build a portfolio possible.

Trust is earned, respect is given, and loyalty is demonstrated. Betrayal of any one of those is to lose all three.

We're a long way from Normandy at this point. Provide legitimate job security and you'll likely have a different outcome.

Outside the playoffs, the bowls are nothing but glorified scrimmages. I'm glad some possible future stars are getting some playing time. Getting them that playing experience helps going forward in hopes of making the bowls that really count.

And all the criticism has been about players "quitting" on the team and not finishing. Not sure how transfers don't fall into that category. They literally quit on our team and didn't finish the season so they could join another college team. Not sure how that is any different than quitting on our team to join a NFL team. Either way, they weren't there for the team in the end, so the result is the same.

Got a job that others depend on me to perform so, no, I was not at the bowl game but not sure what that has to do with anything. I had to do my thing so my team could keep going. I give a bunch of $ to USC and have done so for years. That is another thing me continuing to do my job provides me the luxury and means to do. You are welcome!

Marcus took out a $1.7 million insurance policy his junior year. He also got a $300,000 signing bonus from San Francisco.

You need to stop casting pearls before swine.

It’s a waste of time to engage those who lack a moral compass.

You've yet to make one single point beyond "you don't get it" and you're talking about a moral compass? Please make your case and stop with the silly insults.

Take out a one game (bowl game) insurance policy if that's what keeps the opt outs from playing. If you just played a whole season with no insurance, why let one game come between you and loyalty for your team and school.
There are ways around the opt out.
Can't be that costly for one game.
