I think mine was the Butler NCAA Tourney game. I put my remaining tickets for the weekend on a windshield and then on Saturday, I was kicking myself for not having tickets to go to the Butler-Louisville game. I know it's tame but I am a cheap *** and I wasted $150 instead of trying to sell them.

A close second was any play that Tommy Kelly took part in.

I was an absolute *** to all my friends. They all went out in Auburn and had a good time. I went to the hotel room and sulked. That was the clear defining moment. My life has been much better since. The entire 6 straight losing seasons also helped me get into a groove with my new attitude.

My young daughter started crying, clutched her Mother, and said, "Mommy, Daddy scare me!"

Haven't blown up over sports since.

buy/sell - the insane amount of revenue in the NFL is driving NCAA football head coach and assistant coaching salaries.... I think its true and at that moment I told myself, its all going too far.

I am getting married in December. December 20th to be exact. Its one of the only few times when State and Ole Miss don't have a football game being played. It also is not on during the SEC Championship game.

The way I was trying to phrase was give your story of when you realized sports should not be that important in your life. Mine was when I realized that I threw away $150 because State just lost to Butler and I was so upset, I swore off basketball that weekend.

instead of hanging out, being drunk, and hitting on hot *** college girls. That should take priority over my being mad at a loss. It's also why I actually prefer to go to less crowded, less important games now. I enjoy myself much more.

when we played SC. I was just happy that some degree of normalcy was returning to the USA. Losing that game just didn't bother me like it would've in the past. I felt the same way the rest of that miserable season. Actually I've felt the same way since.

but a gradual change. I used to work with a really big State fan, the kind that gets one plane trip with the team a year, spot in left field, etc. I would ***** about a loss and asked him how he could follow MSU that closely and not come unglued when they fall flat. He said it was experience. He said he endured the Tech and ten year without missing a single play. But then again this guy's personality was to have a good time anyway so maybe he was well adjusted.

For me, when I was single the games were the pinnacle of my mood. A loss and I'd be pissed until Wednesday of the next week. I knew it didn't matter in the grand scheme of things. I wasn't a teenager that got pissed if I got ribbing from friends that were State fans. Hell I was past that yet I still couldn't swap a mild disappointment from the bitterness I was feeling. BUT I got older, I got married, and I had kids and it's changed. I still get excited for games. I still go and cheer. I'm still disappointed with a loss (bunches last 4 years), but it doesn't set my mood for a week. Why? Because we could have a top ten upset this year and I may have to spend the night watching a sick child or we could lose to Samford by three touchdowns and something about the day may lead one of my children to say how much fun they had. It could be anything,, but the bottom line is that life goes on, except that now it's filled with so much more there's not any time to feel the anger or bitterness - or at least not the time I used to have. Once I home the disappointment may still be there, but it's mild and I'll be ready for the next game by mid-week.

I'm still not pleasant to be around after a loss, but nothing like I used to be. That game broke my spirit.

for level of digust with the program. Hiring Croom made it obvious the School didn't give a crap and the Maine game moved me to a realism that it's not worth getting worked up over anymore.

I threw a cup at one of the BYU players from the stands, and needless to say it didn't hit it's intended target, but fortunately it didn't anyone else either.

After I did that, I was like, "I can't believe I just did that." I also cheered when we broke their running backs leg, and I probably shouldn't have done that either. They brought me down to their level.</p>

Everyone walked out of the stadium like zombies that night. All I could think about was how the rest of the world was laughing at us. And that I just wanted to go home.

I almost lost it trying to leave the stadium near the end of the 2003 Egg Bowl. We were getting the **** beat out of us, we were all wet and cold, and the Ole Miss fans just about had the portals blocked so they could yell at us and taunt us. DCD will agree, it was a rare time our dad almost lost his temper.

When we were down by four touchdowns against Tulane two years ago, we were sitting in the West chairback seats. I threw my Walkman, it smashed against the wall, and I screamed, "What the hell is going on?" My 10-year-old son looked up at me like I was the anti-christ. I have been much calmer at games since then.

Went out 12/31/00 with my wife (of 29days at the time) for her birthday during the game with her parents. Pouted and sulked about not being able to watch the game on TV or in person. The whole time at the restaurant was peeking into the bar to check score, greatly pissing off the wife who is 99% of the time a great sport about stuff like that. After we won, my mood changed 180 degrees and I got called out on it. I realized I was getting too old for that ****.

And having my soul broken from 2001-2006 helped the detachment process as well.

So losing builds character????

I always stay until the final whistle. Even during the Maine game I managed to stay the whole game. But I must have left left mid 3rd quarter during that Tulane beat down. I remember getting up and walking away. I must have been 50 feet away before I turned to see where my wife was. She was still sitting in her seat. I yelled at her to get her *** up. From the time it took to get to the car and drive 2/3rds the way to Meridian I think I put together a continuous string of expletives without taking a breath. My wife looked at me wide eyed the whole time. I think I had her scared. That did it for me. Now I have a little girl and I'll be damed if I pull that stunt with her around.

When dealing with things we can't control... and I think that's one thing fans often fail to realize in dire situations. Once the game starts, once it's on the field or court, everything is out of our hands. And all we can do is watch.

My moment (and I'm sure I'll have more) came in Atlanta at the 2004 SEC Basketball Tournament. My hero, Timmy Bowers (quoting Stans, "everyone knows how I feel about Timmy Bah-ers"), dished to nobody on a fast break when he clearly had an easy lay-up late in the game that would have practically sealed the deal, but instead we got no bucket and Vandy went on to win in OT. With the expectations we had going in, it was a major disappointment. We were staying at the HOJO that weekend right next to Underground. Instead of walking back the way we came, me and some friends ended up walking aimlessly through the western side of downtown, cursing and bitching about the game, only to find ourselves near some abandoned train tracks and what looked like make-shift homeless crap shacks, with no one in sight.

After realizing we were in a bad spot, we got it together long enough to find our way back to the hotel. Once there, a friend, upon seeing the highlights on the news, proceeded to rip every page out of the hotel room phone book and scatter the shreds, along with everything in his luggage, all over the room.

It was at that point in time that I realized we had put ourselves in danger of being robbed, beaten, or worse, and my friend had completely trashed our hotel room... over a game.

I've had some rants since, but nothing like that night.

My wife and I left early in the 3rd quarter, knowing we had a box of wine chilling in the hotel room. When we left, some Rebneck said, "Whay's yoo goin'??? Heh heh heh???"</p>

I quietly turned around, stuck my hand out like I was going to shake his, pulled it back at the last second, and said, "I'm going to a hotel room with my date. Don't want to shake hands with yours."</p>

I'll let cb tell that story if he is around, mostly because I don't remember some things. I think his Dad probably still thinks I'm a complete moron.

It was a JP game, I was drinking bourbon by 7 AM easy, and it all went downhill from there. I think that is when it hit me that we were gonna suck in football for a long while.

Managed to curse out a young MSU couple for looking at me, try to pick a fight with UT fan with stupid sunglasses, and yell at Fulmer consistently for 3 hours straight.

I much more tame at the games now....

Up the entire game against the wave and then preceded to choke it away. At that moment in time (the second game of the season) i knew Jackie and the team would mail the rest of the season (finished 2-10), and I would have to endure some classic *** kickings before 2003 was over. It took me a while to live down the fact we had lost to Tulane because even in the shittiest of years we never lost to Tulane.</p>

I punched a 75 year old dude in the nose and hauled *** after the 97 Egg Bowl. Old shyster Ole Miss alky with his 75 year old wife, who had on 20 pounds of make up and numerous plastic surgeries, got in my face about how a redneck school like State deserved a POS like Jackie. POW!!!!
I kinda felt bad but then realized I bet he never pops his old *** mouth off again. Girl I was with freaked. No nookie for ole Sad ,that night. I ran because I didn't want to go to jail for hitting an old man. I figured I would lose in the court of public opinion.

17 that old bastard. Hope the **** hurt like hell.

Drove 3 hours in a driving rain storm with toronado warnings all around. Then the players with the half *** effort. I realized that day if the players did not care enough to put fourth an effort. Then why should I. That was the begining.

Nail in the coffin was 2003 Egg Bowl. Left a Thanksgiving day family gathering to go stand in the rain and watch that. Family events take precedence over football games.

after our best player makes an error that turns a 1 run first inning into a 4 run first inning. After that 100% influenced my mood the rest of the weekend, I decided it was time to call it quits and find some new hobbies.

Mine had to be the morning after I got my MSU tattoo with a bunch of Oregon fans. Or rather when I read that story, it made me realize that I never want to be one of those guys who takes stupid things too seriously.

The kicker for me was the 2003 Alabama game. I don't think I've ever seen a poorer effort on the part of our players. We really stank it up and it seemed like Alabama turned it into a practice. After that I resolved to just do a moderate amount of drinking before the game and have fun at all the games.

My son's birth. I am still passionate about State, but it doesn't affect me like it used to. I don't stew over it until the next game. Don't get me wrong. I still dog cuss them if the game isn't going well and get pumped up when they win, but the recovery from a loss or coming back down after a big win isn't quite as long as it use to be. Also, I have got to the point where I don't care about other fan's opinions of State. I personally could care less what anyone else is doing.</p>

With Quitbeggin, Dawgstudent, Cuzdawg, Frank The Tank, Squintdawg etc.

Even though we sucked, and I knew we were going to get our a$ses handed to us, I would go just to sit on the 50 yard line and ***** and moan very loudly about every miscue with Quitbeggin, just so that I could get underneath the sheep's skin who were sitting around us. Ol Blue remembers these days.

Finally, I grew up and realized that no matter how much I loved Mississippi State football, Mississippi State football was never going to love me back!! That's when I learned that there's more to life than going to football stadium and acting like a moron in the stands. Of course, it's still fun to yell at Gene to get off the field.

Between the ages of 18-24 the level of my sports frustration and how it would affect my daily mood was at an all time high. I can remember not talking to people on Monday because of a loss on the weekend and just being an *******, more than I am usually, just because Ole Miss lost. I used to like to watch MSU lose, now I just don't care. Ten years ago, MSU's success would bother the **** out of me, now Im just indifferent. It helps with being objective. I thought Michael Brown was a more dominant offensive lineman than Michael Oher last year, 10 years ago I would have argued that point, just to argue.

In 2003 we lost to Texas Tech and in classic ole miss fashion, but I remember leaving the game and being pissed, but by the time I got back to the tent, I really didn't care and was just ready to go out.

You have to be careful though, like all problems they pop back up when you least expect it. Bama game last year pissed me off so bad that I really thought I was going to get into a fight with a Bama fan. Did I mention he is my father-in-law.</p>

Wow, that's a new one to me. Impressive. And yes, I do agree with you that the old guys need to watch it. I've run into my fair share of old guys running their mouths. If you're too old to defend yourself, then you don't need to be running your mouth. Granted, I don't think I'd ever have it in me to clock one, but I can see where you're coming from.

I agree. The salt in the wound is usually worse than the wound. The losses don't bother me like they used to, but having to listen to someone shoot off their mouth as if they personally had done something to affect the outcome can really get under your skin. I am not one of those people who get into the whole we conversation. You know the you can't say we are having a good season, because you aren't on the field bs. But when they get up in your face with the we just kicked your *** or quit your whining we are just better than you, it can really get your blood boiling.

As far as age, yeah I was a loud mouth in college and the first couple of years after graduation, but the farther that I get away from school and the bigger the age difference between me and the players the less personal I take it.

I walked home from the game when those bastards went up 35-14 yelling things at the top of my lungs that should've got me killed by somebody. I don't think I've been so pissed off since.

The worst tantrum I ever threw (although I didn't learn a lesson from it or realize that sports shouldn't affect me the way it was) was the '99 Kentucky football game when Westerfield kicked the game winner. That, to me, was the worst referee'd game I'd ever watched and the whiskey was telling me to leave the stadium (we were losing at the time) and go wait on the referees to show back up at their van parked next to the stadium, since there wasn't much time left in the game. So, I waited. Westerfield kicked the game winner, the refs were escorted to their van, and I was there waiting to give them a piece of my mind. I started barking at all of them and took a swing at one of em, when an MSU official came at me. At that point, I realized what the hell I had just done and took off running. I ran from the stadium all the way to the Cotton District to my apartment, torn & bloody pants and all. What an idiot I used to be.

when Jamont hit that 3 at the buzzer to send our game against UK to overtime in Atlanta. There were these annoying UK fans sitting right in front of us that kept turning around and saying "your team won't even make the NIT Tournament" and my only response was that saying "NIT Tournament was redundant, because it was like saying ATM machine."

I dont think he ever pieced it together.

I got to feeling lightheaded when AJohnson picked off that pass against Bama this year too and took it "to the distance!" But I was pretty hammered anyway, so take that with a grain of salt.
