Topic stolen from NAFOOM - Have you had your, "Sports shouldn't be this important" moment yet?...
When dealing with things we can't control... and I think that's one thing fans often fail to realize in dire situations. Once the game starts, once it's on the field or court, everything is out of our hands. And all we can do is watch.
My moment (and I'm sure I'll have more) came in Atlanta at the 2004 SEC Basketball Tournament. My hero, Timmy Bowers (quoting Stans, "everyone knows how I feel about Timmy Bah-ers"), dished to nobody on a fast break when he clearly had an easy lay-up late in the game that would have practically sealed the deal, but instead we got no bucket and Vandy went on to win in OT. With the expectations we had going in, it was a major disappointment. We were staying at the HOJO that weekend right next to Underground. Instead of walking back the way we came, me and some friends ended up walking aimlessly through the western side of downtown, cursing and bitching about the game, only to find ourselves near some abandoned train tracks and what looked like make-shift homeless crap shacks, with no one in sight.
After realizing we were in a bad spot, we got it together long enough to find our way back to the hotel. Once there, a friend, upon seeing the highlights on the news, proceeded to rip every page out of the hotel room phone book and scatter the shreds, along with everything in his luggage, all over the room.
It was at that point in time that I realized we had put ourselves in danger of being robbed, beaten, or worse, and my friend had completely trashed our hotel room... over a game.
I've had some rants since, but nothing like that night.
