Most, simply because they can and illegal tampering from other teams. A few, NIL dollars and illegal tampering from other teams.

Others may want playing time and can't break through the talent ahead of them. Some want to move closer to home, if they are far away.

There are several reasons, as some posters just mentioned above.

1. Some players may believe or have been subtly told that their playing time will be limited next year.
2. Some may have indeed been induced by NIL money. (Although I personally I feel that may have been 2-3 at most )
3. Some players just may a want a compete new beginning. (I came here and it's just not working like I thought it would)
4. Some understandably just wont some more playing time.

Those are just a few examples, unlike some I don't see some big nefarious entity coming to poach such a talent laden team as us. (sarcasm intended)

I don’t know if this was a Gamecock specific question, or a general question. If general, see the above answers. If specific to Carolina, then honestly, we were in the lower ranks of transfers out. So even though a couple of ours were big names, we did better than most for retention and transfers.

I think it's mainly because most players coming out of high school feel like they are better than they are. If they aren't getting the playing time and/or the ball enough they'll blame the coaches and not themselves. Most of them want to be the star and not just part of a team and if they feel like they can't do that at the current place, they'll try to do it somewhere else where they'll hope to be featured more.

Because the transfer portal is an option now.

not all players were life long Gamecock fans like some of us are, so they aren’t as emotionally connected. If they didn’t go where they initially wanted to go, and they saved a coaches phone number from another team- it’s easy to just make contact to insure you have a spot- then enter the portal. Sometimes Prior arrangements are probably made before sone transfers or portals out.
Then I’m sure some teams are being sneaky and scouting the players on other team to poach. Throw up some $$$ up and a 19 to 22 year old is eating out if your hand.

I don't mind the transferring because it keeps the Bamas, UGAs, etc from stockpiling talent. I do wish there was something that could be done about NIL.

Young people leave jobs every couple of years these days. Now that scholarships athletes can, they will too.
