Travel softball today…..

…..so I roll by the local fields today. Drizzling rain, cold wind. Parking lot PACKED with full size trucks and SUVs, full-fledged tournament going on.

Can someone explain the necessity of this? Hey if you want to train in November, knock yourself out. Hit the gym or cages all you want.

But an outdoor tournament? What are you accomplishing?

It was probably already scheduled, and many families planned for and paid to be there. I’ve been there for travel soccer. It’s frustrating when you travel out of town and pay for hotels, only to have the tournament cancelled.

Fall ball, not unlike college teams. Easier for jucos etc to watch in the fall too. November winds it up usually.

I’ve come around to the idea of playing/training year round - as long as it’s done in a smart way. But I guess I just don’t see the purpose of playing a fall tournament in the rain and cold. Those things negatively affect baseball/softball more than other sports. Just not meant to be combined. Wet balls don’t operate correctly (in terms of baseball/softball, pervs).

I helped out with a travel team recruiting in the fall one year in MS for a friend who was coaching (about 3 years ago). Got the whole team committed in basically 2 months. Juco and smaller schools were at all those tournaments.

They didn't start playing until late because MAIS plays in the fall. It was my team, and we had a few private school girls. As for working out etc. I told all of mine to take off from mid-late November to January or when school starts too. Kids need breaks and so do parents.

My neighbors do travel softball. I’m assuming yours is the same as theirs where they pretty much play a marathon of games all in one day or does that change as they get older? As opposed to baseball which might go three days.

Depends on the tournament. Money maker tournaments, especially younger kids are like that. The higher end they go, less that's a problem. Plus, time limits matter. Rarely will you play more than 3 time limited games in a day in higher end tournaments.

All travel tournaments are 2 days max, to maximize revenue and get folks there on the weekends. Big ones will go three days and play Friday night.

The summer “World Series” ones will stretch out because they are trying to keep people on the coast for a week or so and make it a beach trip.

Makes sense. She is still young so it’s crammed into one day.

Yall remember the heat wave in August of 23? A co worker daughter played a softball tournament in Columbia, MS that started at 5 pm on a Saturday. The championship game concluded at 4:30 AM Sunday morning.

Softball goes harder than baseball many times. Not sure if it’s girl dad testosterone or what.
