Hit the ellipsis then gif. Or just copy and paste a link to one on the web. I've done it both ways. I've also added a gif from my photos

In the toolbar, above the reply… starting from left to right, hit the second set of (the three vertical dots) click…..the (gif) drop down tool will appear

I simply clicked the GIF button in the menu bar, searched for a gif, clicked on the one I wanted and it inserted the gif where I left my cursor.
