Concerning preemerge, when is the appropriate time to spread? I always feel like I’m doing it too late (late February/early March). TIA

I know I need to do it but never have.

Bermuda lawn
Has stickers
Weeds with yellow flowers
Weeds with purple flowers

Would need to be a granular because I don’t have a good spray rig.

I’m in north central Mississippi and don’t know anything about lawn care if you can’t tell.

100% agree with you. It seems waiting until Feb for first application is too late. I’m intending to make the first application on Saturday. Balan.

When the growing season arrives, hit it every two months with a hot dose of MSMA (from a hose end sprayer), it'll brown, but be back in a week or two. Three weeks after spaying and before a good rain broadcast some, 13-13-13. Done, Bermuda is easy to take care of.

Spray February for summer weeds, doesn’t hurt reapply in the early summe. Don’t forget to spray in October for winter weeds.

However, don’t put out pre-emerge if you plan putting out grass seed this year.

My lawn guy used pre-emergent a couple of weeks ago. Whatever he does works because I have no weeds at all. It's Zorro Zoysia.

When I lived in town I alternated between pendimethalin and prodiamine every 3 months. Feb, May, Aug and Nov. I put down some Latitude 36 sod in September and the sod farm said use prodiamine on the same schedule.

Apparently that's pretty hardy stuff. Latitude 36 is used on the football fields in Kansas City and Philadelphia. And even in some home laws in those areas.

I don't know which variety is on Dudy Noble but I was surprised to see the Dude on the wall of the sod farm here in TN where I got mine. I asked the guy and he said they did the dude and some other sports fields at State. They did UT and Bryant Denny also. He was sending a flatbed load to Cincinnati for the Bengals to test while I was there.

You’re going to have a hard time getting really specific on the types of weeds unless you use a professional. They usually do 4 or more pre emerge treatments a year. Different weeds cycle in and out about every 3 months. I have a horticulture degree and still use Trugreen. Partly because we have a handshake deal on referrals but really because of the specific nature of their treatments. That all they do and they have the mix rate, application, and equipment most homeowners don’t. One thing with them is you will never have a deep green yard like your neighbor who hits his yard 5 times a year with 13-13-13 and weed and feed. I supplement twice a year between their services with a granular iron, lime, and milorganite mix. This help the acidity of out clay soil and gets that green everyone wants.

i hit mine with Prodiamine the second week of January, then Dithiopyr the first week of May (for summer weeds), then Prodiamine again the first week of September. You can only put out so much Prodiamine per year, so that's why my 2nd application of the year is Dithiopyr. Keeps my lawn pretty weed-free. If you have stuff like Dallisgrass, you'll need to hit that at least three times (spaced 2-3 weeks apart) with MSMA. You can still get it online. Get the Plus with wetter already mixed in.

I have a Bermuda yard now. My extension service says to call them in February/March and put down whatever it is to kill summer weeds (I guess this is pre emerge). Fertilize from April to September, then call them again in October.

Sounds simple enough to me. Winter and spring weeds are already down and will just have to deal with them unless you burn it all off, which I’ve seen some neighbors do.

If I get too busy I might call TruGreen or whatever.

If in Jackson metro, call Weed Warriors. I used Brad's Green Machine for a while (he's a good bulldog IIRC), but they got really sloppy during covid. I'm not thrilled with Weed Warriors, but they are better than Brad.

If Bermuda, don't pay anyone, it is very simple (Bermuda is very hardy, brought tolerant, fast growing, etc.), just follow my advice above. I have St Augustine, so I pay someone.

My normal yearly yard routine for my bermudagrass:

Late Winter: roundup + preemerge (either metolachlor or prodiamine)

Spring: once grass emerges I put out a weed and feed granulated in my spreader. That gets anything small that came up after the roundup that maybe the preemerge missed and gets another residual shot of preemerge in the weed and feed and the first shot of fertilizer.

Summer: fertilize and spray MSMA + Cimmaron Max. Get any grass especially crabgrass and the cimmaron annihilates Virginia Buttonweed and any other broadleafs.

Fall: If I get to it I might put out some more cavelcade or metolachlor

Can’t go wrong with either one of those. Great herbicides for your yard. Only thing I hate about them is the yellow color. That stuff is like yellow magic marker on drugs. We use Prowl (pendinethalin) all the time. You can see the lovely yellow color in this picture.

Definitely yellow. The prodiamine didn't get too bad but I couldn't use the pendulum in the back yard after the dogs went out after I used it the first time.

Is there any hope for a homeowner who lives in the country who has a yard of 2.5 acres that was formerly pasture/hay field and is a mix of weeds, white clover, Bermuda, St Augustine, possibly some centipede and zoysia (from
Past seeding attempts) and a very healthy dose of Bahia?? I can live with some of the weeds. All looks good when it's cut. Mainly I'd like to get rid of Bahia so I don't have to cut when it's not raining and everything else stops growing ha.

That seems to match the extension. But I've always been leery to use the Roundup on the dormant grass. I just assume I'd have to let the winter/spring weeds go ahead and grow, and die out.

And yeah I figure a treatment for crabgrass this summer will be needed, as those seeds are already down from last year.

Roundup is a contact killer and has no residual effect. If the grass is dormant it’s not going to kill it.

Who has found a grass that doesn’t require all these chemicals? Seems stupid for us to do this just to have 1 type of plant in our yards. I may plant kudzu.

At my previous house my yard was zoysia and I never did anything to it. I might spot spray just a little bit of dallisgrass or crabgrass. I felt it was pretty much maintenance free.

I tried to do it myself for a few years. To OP, I’m also in Jackson Metro(Gluckstadt) and I’ve used Simmons Turf Services the last 3 years or so. He had my yard turned around in just a few months. Would definitely recommend him.

Bermuda is the most weedy grass that I deal with.

What type of grass?
How much sun does the lawn receive?
How big is your lot ?
