I believe he got ticked off about some posts on the board. I don’t remember what they were or the context. But he left never to come back.

Lar was a high-character guy, the kind of person who said what he meant and meant what he said. When he said he was done here on the board, you knew it was it. A math major at PSU, he told me, but of course. A good guy.

He was opinionated. I enjoyed watching his go rounds.

Do any of you remember or know of the round and rounds that Uncle Lar would have with a poster by the name of William on the old Penn State Hoops board. That stuff was legendary. William could be absolutely obnoxious but he knew college basketball better than anyone. He knew Penn State history and was staying up late watching west coast games. He'd be commenting on the play of obscure west coast college kids and about how they played. He should have been kicked off many times, but he added so much to the conversation that he was worth while.

I remember William just destroying Ben Luber nonstop, and Lar hated that he would do stuff like that to a college kid and they would go at it. Talk about entertainment. William would capitalize parts of posts like he was yelling at you. Especially, when he was calling you names, and he would call posters, coaches and players many names. Many were down right original. Other people could not post like him. You couldn't copy his style.

Pretty sure, William left that board when in mid February of 2011. He said he would stop posting for some ridiculous amount of time (I think he announced it in minutes or hours and it came out to like 21 years or something) if PSU made the tourny. They did and he never posted again. There were posters that asking him to come back, but he stayed true to his word and never made another post until that board closed down. Sometimes you could actually see that he was online looking, and I understand he would PM some posters, but he never made a public post again. To be honest, I lost a lot of interest on the board after he left, and I was one of its long term posters. I was on there in the 90's. It was the first board I ever registered on. Actually, with the Sandusky thing, I really lost some interest in PSU sports for a while. There were so many trolls and I hated commenting on that stuff back then.

Its a shame that board isn't around now. It was by far an away the best Penn state basketball board. Small group, but they were all fans. There would be well over 100 posts with every game.

The thrill of victory and the agony of reading about it on PennStateHoops.com

I think this is the same Uncle Lar. This is his website for Happy Valley area bands and music. Don't know if it is up to date or not.
Gotta be the same Uncle Lar, right? He was connected to The Tavern somehow, if I recall? Seemed he knew nearly everything to one degree or another about PSU sports and PSU/State College in general.
If it's not the same guy, then maybe 2 Uncle Lars is better than one.

Lar's last posts were in July 2020 during Covid. He followed CNN to the letter and got in a huge fight over masking, etc with several others and left in a huff. Larry was the coordinator of the State College Santa Crawl but I'd don't think he's done it since covid. I'm not going to list his full name here but he has been interviewed by the CDT, State College.com, and many other local publications so if you want to track him down it's pretty easy.

Lar was also the best source for information about hi-fi stereo systems we had on the board. He really knew his stuff. He is a great guy who is well liked by many. I met him on several Santa Crawls.

The posts that sent Lar packing were racial, not due to COVID or masking.
