Underrated: Ward’s.

The burgers are even better than I remember from when I was a kid.

Properly Rated: The Old Country Store in Lorman.

Yes, the fried chicken is that good.

Overrated: The Neshoba County Fair.

An event known as Mississippi’s House Party held on the hottest time of the year. Folks have to battle dehydration, storms, or both.

I assume you don’t have a cabin

The fair is a special place. I don’t have a cabin, but when I’ve been with friends, it’s amazing.

Nope, no cabin.

I’ve been with family a few times. My sister’s college roommate’s family had a cabin I think?

The fair just isn’t interesting.

The TLDR version:

Anything Mississippi-related I guess.

The longwinded explanation:

Uncle Ruckus’s response to my Mississippi gonna Mississippi comment in the business thread a week and a half ago made me think of things & places I think that are: good about & in the state; better than what most people think; and those things that aren’t as great…

Underrated: Scarce LE/regulation enforcement, you can pretty much do what you want as long as you don't infringe upon others (except have an abortion).

Propely rated: humidty, mosquitos and poor folks (who are generally content).

Overated: Does in Greenville.

Agree 100% on the underrated!

Overrated: 1. Taylor Grocery. I've had better fish from any random gas station. And, I didn't have to risk chipping a tooth to eat it. Add on to that the long wait to even get in the place because its "the" place to go because everyone is afraid to say it really sucks so they keep drawing in new suckers. 2) Zips (used to be awesome when I was growing up down there). Now, a shadow of its former self. Much like Christy's became after the grease would no longer eat through your take-out bag.

That’s why I led off with the TLDR version.

Knowing how pedantic I am, I knew I didn’t want to include the longwinded explanation in the original post.

Zip’s has long been a place I’ve been meaning to visit.

Someday I’ll have to remember to call them for a takeout order as often as I drive through Magee.

Over Rated
Bo Bounds. That guy suck.

Under rated
State Parks (The little known Grand Gulf State Park is pretty damn cool)
Rivers ( We have a lot of them and you can have a lot of fun on them. Fishing, Camping, and water sports like ski boats and jet skis.)
Hunting (Some of the counties are great for hunting)
Historical places to visit (There are a lot of historical places to visit all over the state and there is something for everyone. There are a lot in the Jackson area)
National Parks (Vicksburg Military Park is great place to visit with kids. The Natchez Trace is a great road to get out and venture on.)
Off the wall things (Metal Detecting, arrow head hunting and magnet fishing. You can do until you just can't do anymore. All over the state)

Properly rated
Everything else.

Speaking of burgers .....I just had a Texas burger at Mugshots and it was pretty darn good. The jalapenos added a nice kick.

Underrated - Vicksburg Military Park - world class statues and monuments. Preserved trench and fort formations. Really interesting cast of American legends involved. Easy ride when all the rides are open and a great walk / run

Properly Rated - The Delta - lots of characters and culture but poor as hell and not getting any better. Good food, good music, bad accommodations and bad leadership.

Overrated - Madison, MS - over priced real estate, paper thin local culture, limited stellar dinner locations for such a high income area, worst traffic in the metro

Underrated: College Baseball. It’s not underrated here but nationally MS college baseball is underrated.

Properly Rated: Stadium cups. They smell awful and we know it.

Overrated: fat chick cover models on SI swimsuit issue. I know, I know… not MS, but they sell those awful things here!!!

Overrated: Oxford. It is a nice college town but not what some people make it out to be. A few of the night spots that people mention are ridiculous expensive and most students don't go in them. The restaurants are good to ok nothing great.

AJAx.... overrated. The Breakfast club is better. Big bad breakfast... Breakfast club and Starkville cafe are better.

underrated: Starkville. It is a nice college town with nice restaurants and entertainment options that the students can actually afford and enjoy.

Underrated: It's obvious from this post that DeSoto County is the most underrated thing in the state. It consitantly has the best education in the state. Access to the rest of the world is easier from here. Olive Branch earned a "Best Place to Live" from a major publication. Heck most of y'all don't even consider it is part of Mississippi (as does the state of Mississippi).

Properly Rated: The Big Four. They are still a prime Crappie fishing destination.

Overrated: The Gulf Coast Beaches. I know is just a natural thing that there is no drop off and they are just a huge sandbar. We should do a much better job of promoting Ship Island where we have a beach like much of the rest of the Gulf Beaches in Alabama and Florida.

Ship Island is like 10 miles out and the water can turn from glass to chop in an instant. Pontoons weren't made for rough water, they generally don't take waves well (a tritoon is better at it though), v hull boats cut through the waves much better. The ferry out to Ship is very slow and it takes about an hour to get there. I think it makes two round trips per day. Operating a toon in the open gulf is a whole different animal than on the back bay, Rez, Grenada, Sardis or Enid. With all that being said, I'd take a toon to Ship as long as the weather was right, and it had plenty of HP.

Cleveland is overrated? Who in the high holy living 17 has ever gotten on a soapbox about the awesomeness of Cleveland?

Underrated: Tourism and recreation POTENTIAL, from Natchez to Tishomingo. Jackson’s POTENTIAL as an entertainment-district downtown. Ability to find land. Educational possibilities, can get any education you need here, cheaply. Egg Bowl rivalry.

Properly rated: Gulf Coast. Catfish restaurants. Jackson crime. Current Jackson political leadership.

Overrated: Friendliness of the people.

Can’t really say anything else is overrated because nothing is rated highly.

Cleveland is the Jewel of the Delta and the only Delta City worth a flip. Until a recent Federal Judge's ruling it had the only Public HS with sizable white attendance. It is a neat little town and I've been kicked out of the some of the best bars in town, but I agree it is over rated. It's nice compared to the Delta, against any other measure it would be on the bottom.

It’s weird that you started this thread just to **** on the Neshoba County Fair.
NCF is a really unique experience that only fats and poors have bad things to say about it.

Overrated: Ward's. Been 2 times in my life and don't see the big deal.

Underrated - Tupelo, MS. We went in June and I was really impressed with the city. Seemed like a decent amount to do there relative to a Mississippi City. Add Bay St. Louis to the list as well. There downtown area is pretty damn nice.

Properly Rated - fine dining steakhouses in Jackson, MS metro outside of Tico's. I'd put Tico's in the overrated category.
