I seriously wonder if 17-22 year old's are mature enough to handle this kind of "crowning" of an incoming freshman who hasn't played a snap.
NFL players are a few years older and wiser and have an established financial "road map" to help guide them.
While the money figure likely includes an entire 4 year commitment and performance incentives.....it has very good potential to create a schism on the team. There would be a different reaction if the money was distributed to entice a successful player to stay instead of declaring.

Not to mention, a lot of them still fail miserably at managing their money. Though I think it’s generally better now than it used to be.

There is still that sticky issue with Craig James and prostitutes.
If Craig James was getting sticky with prostitutes...he clearly was having a good time.....

The chance that Underwood got a "$10.5 million wagon full of money dropped into his lap" are about 1 in 10.5 million :) . So, "there's a chance"

The entire provenance of that bit was:
1) Some website/message board guru pulled a number out of a hat and said during his recruitment "Underwood's NIL value is $10.5 million" Whatever the heck that is.
2) Portnoy, the guy from Barstool - who is pretty much nothing but a fool and a self-promoter - wants people to believe he somehow rescued Michigan football by slathering Underwood in a swimming pool of $ (check out Mr Portnoy: David Portnoy - Wikipedia)
3) The hard-charging journalists in sports media/blogosphere took off and ran with it as click bait.

Is Underwood getting $ shoved into his pockets to go to Michigan? Sure. Is it a large sum - by normal people terms? Probably. Would he also have gotten pockets stuffed with money to go to LSU, or anywhere else? Sure.
It is what it is. And that is the world of "college" football circa 2024.

To steal a phrase: That is what we are up against.

Good for the kid, he’s using his body for everyone’s entertainment so get what you can. Bad for the “school” or whatever we are calling these programs now. I wouldn’t be too sure that the fact that it happened creates locker room problems per se; most of these guys seem to support each other via some unspoken code or self serving interest that says “that could be me some day.” What I would watch out for is the kid being taken advantage of by everyone, including teammates: big dinners, expensive gifts, loans, business ventures, etc. that could create some locker room problems.
