He’s a 5th year player, so don’t think he has eligibility left. Really doesn’t matter if he did. He will only be able to make money in college, so he’s trying to take advantage. At least he’s honest enough about his intentions, unlike a certain WR for Ole Miss.I'm not really sure what his ultimate goal is. He's not NFL caliber, that much is for sure. He has a 43.8% completion percentage this year with 318 yards in 3 games, 6.6 yards average. He is adept as a runner, but overall, he's not bound for the league. He's in 5th year and is 22/23 years old. I can't see him commanding big NIL bucks like your top players. Seems, financially, it would be in his best interest, even if UNLV is unable to meet their NIL obligations (which we have no reason to believe at the moment), to play this year out. If UNLV made the playoffs, he would surely be in for a much bigger pay day for a larger school next year.
I get the purely emotional reaction of wanting to quit b/c he's not getting what he was promised (allegedly) but it doesn't make long-term business sense.

Your response is more reasonable and if the QB changed up on them just because they won a couple of games that changes the dynamic. My understanding is this would be the kid's last year if he played the season out. I guess he doesn't see himself as a guy that could even make a practice squad roster in the NFL and this is a last ditch attempt to somewhat cash in.That's right, Al Bundy here played highschool football.
The truth is, as usual, in the middle. There will be teammates that understand, IF what the player says is true. And there will be players that are pissed.
If the above tweet is true, I don't think many teammates will be understanding.
Some of this smells like the Jaden Rashada mess when he transferred to Florida for a couple minutes. He went there on a verbal promise it seems as well. He at least got out of there before the season started and ended up at Georgia. It seems assistant coaches lying about NIL opportunities is another result of this new world we live in with College Football.
Which begs the question, who in their right mind is idiotic enough to take an NIL verbal promise from an assistant coach as binding?
Coaches and programs can't make any NIL offers, only the collectives can. Sluka must be dumb as a bag of hammers if he signed based on anything from an assistant coach regarding NIL.lol, if this is even true, it would mean he based his decision on a verbal promise from an assistant coach of what he would be paid? Not even a verbal promise from the collective? And he had nothing in writing?
How dumb are this kid and his parents?
So neither UNLV nor their collective reneged on any commitment, as he alleged. As this narrative by Thamel goes, he transferred there and hoped to work out a $100,000 NIL deal. No agreement could be reached, so he's quitting.
If this report is true, it's just as bad as quitting b/c you feel your market value has increased.
While I may not like it and I think it’s bad for the sport, this is example #1296 that they aren’t student athletes anymore. They’re paid professional athletes.Hey may, indeed, contractually be in the right, but quitting on your teammates 3 games into the season, on Tuesday of a game week, no less, will never be viewed favorably for the player. And, you were right to start that sentence with an "if". We have no idea if what he's saying is true. Very well could be he simply got a better offer elsewhere.
I don't think anyone would dispute that, but it's just an awful thing that such decisions have now become part of the landscape. It's sick.If he agreed to NIL A and it's not being paid, he's in the right.
I think some people just got their wires crossed. But contracts are coming - they must - which will guarantee something from schools that was originally supposed to be between a player and entities that wanted to engage him/her for whatever purpose. Schools were foolish to put themselves in this situation, but the desire to compete and win has overridden good sense. Right now, they're stuck with being these players' b!tche$. This case is an outlier.Very glad to see UNLV pushing back on this bull crap story from Sluka.

UNLV: QB’s NIL demands violated NCAA pay-for-play rules
Matthew Sluka left the UNLV football team because the university failed to make good on a promised payment of $100,000, according to his father and agent. UNLV strongly disputed their version of ev...www.reviewjournal.com
"Bill Paulos, a UNLV alumnus and booster who serves as the president of the Friends of UNILV, was incredulous at the account of events from Sluka’s side. It would be different if NIL started yesterday, but NIL has been around for almost four years. It’s inconceivable to me that there would be no realization that there needed to be a contract" Paulos claims Cormartie didn’t make his initial outreach to the collective until last month, and it appears he isn’t a registered agent in Nevada. “We received an email from that agent in late August,” Paulos said. “(Cromartie) said he was exploring NIL opportunities with friends of UNILV and mentioned nothing about a contract or Mr. Sluka not being paid.”
This whole things just reeks from Sluka's side.
The backup QB accounted for himself quite admirably. Threw for 182 yds, rushed for 119, and accounted for 4 TD's.Well, Sluka's gambit blew up in his face.
With UNLV's 59-14 dismantling of Fresno State, he's already an afterthought for UNLV. New QB turned in a better performance than any of Sluka's up to this point.
What a stupid, stupid move on his part. Could have had a shot at navigating his team to the playoffs. And all for what? $60,000 or so?
I don't see any P4 teams coughing up high 6 figures or 7 figures for a thoroughly one-dimensional running QB.
