So, after months (years?) we're finally going to have some info. known regarding the stadium area I suppose.

The University of South Carolina will announce what it is calling “a proposed major development project” on Tuesday, according to a media advisory from the university. Ray Tanner, USC’s athletic director, and Ed Walton, USC’s chief financial officer and executive vice president for administration, will discuss the project Tuesday during a media briefing. The project will be officially announced early Tuesday afternoon, according to the advisory. No additional details were provided.

I already know that it is less and different from what was originally envisioned. But y'all enjoy gazing at the shiny objects.

Yeah. Lots of smoke about the East Upper going bye bye & being replaced by condos & suites. Diminishing stadium capacity by around 12k. Looks like catering to the ultra rich & the common money ticket buyer is getting squeezed out.

This better bring a national caliber program.

Yikes. Anything that reduces stadium capacity by 12,000, after we already reduced it by a couple thousand, would not impress me at all.

USC to announce proposed major development project Tuesday

This headline from the State newspaper seems to imply little to do with the stadium. Tanner's presence seems to leave open the possibility of facilities involvement. We'll see soon. Anything that doesn't involve university acquisition of the fairgrounds would be insuficient, in my opinion.

I want to see the dreaded state fair moved to Bermuda.

It's an announcement of a future announcement. We're moving along...

I did see the possibility of seat backs.

The announcement is that we've got 900 acres to develop and you developers are welcome to propose projects and hopefully develop this property in a manner that suits your interests and our desires, once we know what our desires really are. While you developers are considering what you want to do, we'll be trying to figure out something about the stadium, which needs an immense amount of work to be brought up to modern standards.

Seriously, do we know how to oversell an announcement or what? They teased us with "it's a game-changer for college football." And what we got was "we think we'd like to develop land near the stadium. no idea what that looks like yet." Why was this even an announcement? Was there even an artist's rendering of what a potential development could look like to whet people's appetites?

For the people desiring to pay for the "luxury" experience. I took it to mean more suites, more premium type seating, but not necessarily armchair seating everywhere. But maybe that will be the plan. Right now, there's really no solid plan for anything.

This was a Tanner relevance opportunity.

I wonder what he does with his time. He said he's been working on this for 2 years. I know wheels move slowly, but "I've been slaving away at this for 2 years, and I'm happy to report than an RFI has been submitted" just falls kind of flat. Again, at least show us an artist's rendering to stoke our imaginations of what could be.

lol I love this statement from the University (I have bolded the key words): the University of South Carolina has started the process to determine the feasibility of a major modernization of Williams-Brice Stadium that could also pave the way for the development of more than 800 acres of undeveloped USC property situated adjacent the Congaree River.

Lot's of uncertainty for a major announcment.

So there is a chance!

Right. And what does a major modernization of WB have to do with the development of 800 acres of land? How would modernizing the stadium "pave the way" for development of that land?

Are the 800 acres of "undeveloped land," the tracts surrounding the USC golf practice center on National Guard Road beyond the indoor practice facility? That's the only significant tract of undeveloped land I see near the stadium when I check Google maps. If so, portions of that property are over a mile away from Williams-Brice in a straight line (by comparison, our softball stadium is only about 3,700 feet from WB). It's hard to see how development of that property would be directly linked to a stadium modernization plan.

We could do it. 800 acres is a HUGE tract of land in an urban setting. A square mile is only 640 acres. Looking at the map, if you took all the undeveloped property between the practice facility and the river, extended all the way down to Heathwood Hall and along Beltway Blvd leading up to Heathwood, that _might_ total 800 acres. Forget building a new football stadium - if they were of mind to, they could build an entirely new campus in that much acreage.

How about we sell it and use the proceeds to fund NIL for player purchases (edit: enticements)?

All this adds up to is that the Bluff Road Blight will abide until Kingdom Come.

This was a truly vacuous promulgation. No substance at all.

Upper East blows. They should make it all air conditioned box seats similar to State Farm arena in ATL where they are vertical. But this roll out is pathetic. Another Tanner special.
