In '23, LSU's women's basketball team won a national title and brought in $2.2M in revenue. Their expenses were $10.3M including a $3.6M salary for Mulkey. For those that don't want to pull out a calculator, that is an $8.1M deficit during a season in which they were the best women's team on the planet.

With that in mind, can someone help me understand why a player such as Flau'jae Johnson would be viewed as having an NIL "value" of $1.5M? Why would anyone pay that?

How do you justify NIL for any sport that isn’t profitable?

I've never heard of this person, so how would one pronouce "Flau'jae"?

Is it Flo-Jo, like the olympic star?
Or maybe French, like flaw-zzshhay?

Womens Basketball is going to become the WNBA of college sports. A money loser with strong personalities advocating for big paydays.

17 it, I'm just gonna ask it.

Does anyone have a theory or even a hypothesis as to why the black (is that the reasonable term nowadays?) community started giving their children what can really only be called ridiculous, unpronounceable names??

I literally laughed out loud by myself in my living room watching the news last night. It wasn't the appropriate response considering the story was about a murder. But the suspect's name flashed on the screen and all I remember is it started with a D and had Q's and R's in a crazy random order and made no kinda sense.

What is this trend??

I once talked to an HR director that openly admitted that if they see a name like this, they pass. Whether you like it or not, naming your child has an effect on their life. I ran into someone recently named Aiche. Pronounced like the letter H.

These NIL valuation are highly inflated but she is very popular online. She makes music and has a song out with Lil Wayne. She is signed with Roc Nation(Jay Z) so i imagine all her paid social media plus the music stuff probably has her bringing in a nice chunk of change.

A few thoughts...

- this claims $3.3MM in revenue and $11.8MM in expenses. Doesn't change your point, but it's worth pointing out that I don't think a lot of these program cost reports are totally accurate.

- I don't think a program has to be in the black for a player's NIL to be high justifiably high. That is what your post says though.

- the on3 NIL valuations seem very similar to the reports hat state how much money a specific sports program 'earned' in a given season.
...the valuations seem questionable in many instances.

It's not just HR, it's us that do the hiring. Sometimes you just need to take on a nickname.

For true NIL, that would be correct. For pay-to-play, the program would need to be somewhere in the ballpark I think depending on what it is. Football could probably lose a pretty crazy amount of money and still be considered worth it for the exposure and recruitment. I think plenty of students base a large part of their decision on how much fun the college is, and a good football team produces 7 big weekends on campus a year usually. Men's basketball you can probably justify a lot based on exposure. Then you have Women's basketball, baseball, and softball, which I'm sure there's some real value when you are UConn women's team (or the team that breaks UConn's streak), and probably some lesser value when you win a national championship, and then a much lower value after that. Even winning a national championship I think is basically you get your name in front of people for a positive story once or twice. How much would you pay for advertisement that does that? Would you pay $8M? No clue. Pretty sure you wouldn't pay $8M to get close but not win the national championship if you were basing it on marketing, but really don't have a good idea of what a reasonable marketing budget is for a university.

I have no theory as to why moms would want to name their kids something hard to spell (or pronounce), but I some of them are funny or clever. Like, come on, they knew what they were doing when they named Dude Person, Storm Duck, or - my favorite - Moh Bility. That's pretty good right there.

Of course, it's not all in the AA community... hello, General Booty and Memorable Factor.

When does the platform for WBK become non-viable? People and companies are willing to pay these athletes big money. Good for both sides. But, will sports with large deficits get cut and eliminate the opportunities for athletes to get their payday?

Does the Dunne girl (gymnastics LSU) make as much in endorsements if she isn’t a college gymnast? Seems like a pretty steep climb going from college to Olympic gymnastics. How does her payday look in a world without college gymnastics?

I went to Madison Ridgeland High School in 86 with a white boy named Mike Hunt. I'd much rather have been named Flau'jae.

Sounds like she’s actually making money off of her name, image, and likeness. Shouldn’t LSU receive all of that money and give her NIL money? **. Please let them start calling something other than NIL.

I think the NIL On3 evaluations are based upon other factors than their "worth". It's like social media interactions, etc.

At the end of the day, I don't think it's that reliable. If there's a shortage on ILB and we really need one - you will overpay. It's just like the NFL.
