And #9 among U.S. pubics!

See the link below. From the article:

”UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — The 2023 QS World University Rankings, released on June 8, confirm Penn State as a top 100 global institution. The University rose in the rankings to 93rd in the world, and came in ninth among all public U.S. universities, even as the number of institutions ranked increased 9% in size over the past year to include more than 1,400 of the world’s leading universities.

The QS Rankings are considered to be one of the most reputable international university-ranking systems, and is used as a popular source of comparative global data about university performance, according to Roger Brindley, vice provost for Penn State Global.

QS's methodology for the world university rankings measures academic and employer reputation; faculty-student ratio; international faculty and students; and research citations per faculty.”

Sorbonne at 72?!

Angry Season 4 GIF by The Simpsons

Outside of the usual American suspects (Ivies, Stanford, Duke, MIT, etc.) notable publics Michigan, Illinois, UC Berkely, UCLA, UC San Diego, U Texas, Wisconsin, Washington, and Georgia Tech are before PSU. So, wouldn't that make PSU the #10 ranked US public school on the list?

Seems like a reasonable list overall.

I think being ranked as the No. 9 or No. 10 U.S. public is damn respectable. Nothing wrong with that at all.

Where are the actual ratings? All I see is a PSU news release referring to them.

Good catch…I reviewed it and I agree that there are those 9 public schools ahead of us.

These guys have Vandy at 199. US News at 14.

These rankings have Notre Dame at 243. US News says 19th.

These say Virginia at 253. US News at 25.

Somebody has some splainin' to do.

Different criteria. Obviously any criteria that rate PSU favorably are wrong.

Aside from Fair being butt hurt ad nauseam over ticket pricing, this is very good publicity for Dear Old State. 9th (or 10th) among the public universities is outstanding no matter how the perennial self loathing lemmings on this board like to challenge the “data”.

Ah, I am long over STEP and I really do love Penn State. It's the people that run her I have a problem with. Perhaps President Bendapudi will change that. I do have a problem with a ranking that lists us 112 places above Dartmouth and has both us, and Pitt, ahead of schools like Dartmouth, Vanderbilt, Notre Dame, and Virginia. Still, the University will shout this ranking from the rooftops, as it should, and those who attend a lesser ranked school, like Dartmouth, will find solace in their home in the Hamptons.

And then there was this:

Dartmouth vs. Penn State Graduation Outcomes Comparison

Which is better, Dartmouth or Penn State? Graduation rate, salary and amount of student loan debt are indicators of a college which offers better outcomes for its graduates. Compare the following outcomes facts between Penn State and Dartmouth.

  • The graduation rate at Dartmouth is higher that Penn State Main Campus (95% vs. 87%)
  • Graduates from Dartmouth College earn on average $48,700 more per year than Penn State graduates after ten years. ($104,000 vs. $55,300)
  • Dartmouth College students graduate with a $13,357 lower median federal student loan debt than Penn State graduates. ($13,461 vs. $26,818)
  • Dartmouth graduates are paying $138 less per month on federal student loans than Penn State graduates. ($139 vs. $277)
  • More Dartmouth graduates are actively paying back their federal student loan debt than former Penn State students, three years after graduation. (87% vs. 69%)

Of course, none of this matters. After all, we are #93 and Dartmouth is #205.

If all PSU women in their last 2 years of school shaved their pubics, I wonder if our ranking would have risen!!!!
Most of them probably have already. My understanding is that is how they roll these days. I definitely do not speak from personal knowledge on this issue.

Gambit: These metrics have everything to do with the methodology they use in ranking schools. The USN&WR rankings (with which most people are familiar) place a relatively higher emphasis on things like class size and alumni giving, which tend to favor private schools.

Frankly, I could not give a shiat where the private schools rank. All I care about is the publics. PSU came in as the No. 9 or 10 public university in the U.S. That is ample reason to rejoice, in my book.

I certainly understand that methodology varies and accounts for differences in rankings. What I cannot understand is why I should take seriously any ranking that places us 112 spots above Dartmouth, and I don't.
If, for some reason, we were not part of this ranking, would anyone on this board take this one seriously knowing Pitt was ranked higher, by any methodology, than Dartmouth, Vanderbilt, Notre Dame, and Virginia?
With that I will move on. I fear I am dampening the love fest.
