We have a right fielder that can't catch a can of corn.

Windy, my arse. They guy did not have to run very far at all! This is Bad News Bears stuff.
Lucky to get out of the inning without further damage.

Coming from one who has more than my share of baseball, in center field,
the big three problems for a an outfielder,1. Sun, 2.playing at twilight, 3. high winds (in this case 15mph) especially on high drifting balls.

It was a tough play.

For me, sun and windwere never reallya big problem. Notsure why, but I was able to handle thosepretty well.It wastwilight like you mentioned, andlow field lights that killed me. You pick it up instantly, then lose it for 3/4 of the ball flight. Terrible to deal with.Being color blind didn't help mewith twilight either. The ball blends in very well and it'svery very difficult topick the ball up.

But in Shepherd's case, I will defer tomy meteorology professor and put it like hedid; "Sometimes the wind just blows." Corny, but fits. Sometimes it just blows and does weird stuff with the ball. </p>

wind, sun, lights, whatever, all may have made the play difficult, but the damn ball should have been caught. This is not little league.

That's what PREGAME is for. To judge the winds and adjust accordingly. It 10 am in the morning. There should be no light or high sky problem. I've played my share of games in the outfield and that ball SHOULD have been caught. Shepard was shaded toward the line and he did not have to make a long run. The damn ball landed 10 feet behind him for God's sake. He looked rather silly.

this is the damn SEC Tournament and college baseball. Those are the excuses you use for a kid when he misses the ball, not a damn college athlete playing in the SEC. No excuse THAT ball should not have been caught, none.

I have seen him mess up four pretty routine plays this year. I only saw five games in person this year and a handful on television. That's a lot of routine plays. One of them was running at an angle toward the fence and he thought he was closer than he was but it was still pretty routine. He just doesn't look comfortable fielding. He has all the tools, but he just doesn't look quite as comfortable out there as a division one baseball player should be.
