We haven't won an SEC opener in 7 seasons

Since our 2017 win over Missouri (of all teams). I was unaware of the trend. Schedule-makers haven't done us any favors, though, as 3 of those games were against UGA (ranked #3, 2 and 1), and 1 each against Bama (#2) UT (#16) and Arkansas (#16). This UK game makes most the "winnable" SEC opener we've had since 2017, though it sure feels like anything but winnable.

Maybe we're due?

I hadn't even thought of that but went back to double check your research. What a crazy streak. That also means we've started 1-0 in conference play only twice since 2013.

Was just curious so went back and looked, and this is, by far, our worst streak since joining the league. Surprising. Our previous longest streak was 3-in-a-row (1997-1999 and 2013-2015). Best we've ever done is win 3-in-a-row from 2010-2012. Overall record in openers is 12-20.

Didn't count them up, but obviously UGA would account for most of the 20 losses.

Interestingly, and somewhat depressingly: Our first 21 years in the league, we were 10-11 in SEC openers; our last 11, we are 2-9.

That doesn't scream "progress".

Your mention of UGA made me think of when Will Muschamp's South Carolina team beat Georgia in Athens in 2019. We talk about Beamer's career being wrapped around the 2 wins over UT and Clemson in 2022. It just goes to show that upsets happen. We should not make personnel decisions on emotional highs.

On the flip side, UK has won 5 of the last 7 SEC openers

Come on! It’s UK. What’s the problem? It’s not Bama.

Well, part of the problem is I saw us play last week. Also, they have a very good defensive line and one of the best defensive lineman in all the country.

I’m talking about not having an easy game to start the SEC. Other than Vandy, who ya got?
