That and the 2003 LSU game are some of my favorite Ole Miss moments. If Eli hadn't tripped, they're probably playing in Atlanta that year. Man, so many individual things had to go wrong for them to have never represented the SEC West in the SECCG.

LSU game Eli's last year (2003?) where the center stepped on Eli and tripped him at a crucial moment, and then the kicker that was one of the best fg kickers in the nation that year missed a fg.

I think you can find those type games for any program, but the Arkansas lateral is probably the type of most teams don't have. Would they have potentially won the west that year of they had won that game?

ETA: I don't now why I thought that game meant more than it did.

The odd situations that have prevented Ole Miss from getting the SEC championship game:

1) Hunter Henry Woo Pig Sooie Lateral 4th and 25 (followed by the facemask on the 2 point conversion)
2) Eli tripping on Doug Buckles foot against LSU
3) Mark Stoops going for it on 4th and 7 on the Kentucky 20 yard line in the 4th quarter (and a KY fumble for a TD)
4) LSU getting two 4th down conversions, on the last second scoring drive to tie the game and then win in OT.

Didn't Doug Buckles step on Eli's foot and cause him to trip? I know somebody did and my aging sometimes faulty memory says it was him. 17 it, even if it wasn't him l, it should have been.

You’re thinking of 2000. We would have won the West if we had beaten Arkansas and OM the final two weeks of the season. But we lost both games and somehow finished 4-4 in the SEC. I would say that was one of Sherrill’s worst coaching jobs, considering the talent that team had, but he topped it with the next three abysmal seasons.
