We've heard a lot about some record ratings for NFL games on Christmas day with the Steelers pulling in some 20-million viewers.

That got me to wondering what is the most-viewed game in college football history?

Has anyone seen the ratings for Kansas State =Rutgers bowl game yesterday? Considering that Memphis drew 750 k viewers versus Georgia Southern, the last game Rutgers played only had less than 500 K. So who was the executive who claimed that Rutgers would "lock down" the New York market??????

Aided by a massive snowstorm covering the northeast the day/night prior.
Billed at the time as the game so big it wouldn’t fit on New Year’s Day.
ESPN (I know, I hate them too) ran a great article years ago about how that game ushered in the modern era of CFB, starting with moving the game to the 2nd which was a major change at the time

Fact-checking this against Grok/xAI, and it says yes the 1987 Fiesta Bowl holds the record with a 25.1 rating, however the interpretation of 70 million viewers may be a reflection of cumulative viewers rather than average viewers throughout the totality of the game.
