What is the point of bowl games at this point?

The original reason for bowl games was for tourism. To get the snow-bound people down to sunny CA for the rose bowl or FL. Bowls will work as long as they are financially viable.

Some bowls mattered, the Gator Bowl certainly fit that description. About 50,000 USC fans said so by attending. I do agree that with players opting out, and transferring, many players could GAS. The ones that suited up for us, damn sure played hard last Friday late afternoon.

All the good players aren't playing. Nobody seems to care. You got kids even sitting out playoff games. I mean this has gotten ridiculous.
Many games I watched the players cared. There were many great games. I love it.

You couldn't be more wrong imo. The games I saw were exciting. The players were going all out and the fans were excited and into the game. Most had respectable attendance.

Additional practice for next year's group that will be new starters and/or fighting for that starting position. As for keeping Bowls viable, pay each player a bonus check for being on the roster on game day and an additional bonus if they get into the game. Pay the same amounts to everyone.
I hate this idea. Then...you're just extending the NIL stuff and further ruining CFB.

If players were ONLY paid for bowl games...that make a whole lot of sense if you're CFB. Stipend during the year... at beginning of each semester that they are in school and nice bowl $ prizes. Because FYI....some of us are MORE likely to watch and pull for our teams in CFB if the players AREN'T paid. The attendance and TV numbers will continue to dwindle. They let the inmates run the asylum. I can't believe this many sane, smart people were influenced/bullied/caved to these ideas born out of the ideals and loose politics of California (thanks O'Bannons).

Don't many bowls already give the players on each team "gifts," e.g., aparrel, electornics, Best Buy gift cards, etc.?

This. The idea that bowls are meaningless because they aren't involved in the title game has always been true.

The opt outs? That's a different story.
Right. The playoff killed the bowl games. It was obvious that would be the outcome, but I was told that wouldn't happen. lol

I'm not sold its the playoffs that's doing that, over other changes. The playoffs didn't change anything about the vast majority of bowls that didn't decide the national title.

Fine with me. Playoffs are much more attractive overall IMO.
Bowls are great getaways for fans and players. And also for teams who lost in the first round or two of the playoffs (assuming a true 16-team playoff in FBS).

Exactly right. The advent of the playoffs changed absolutely nothing whatsoever about the significance for almost all the bowls. It added significance to the bowls which are included in the CFP. For every other bowl, however, there is no more or less significance than there was prior to the CFP.

We just played in the Gator Bowl. Can anyone explain to me how the Gator Bowl had less significance this year than it did in 2014, which was the last year it was played prior to the advent of the CFP? Nobody playing in the Gator Bowl has ever been playing for a title.

It's just a nonsensical argument that, for some reason, people keep repeating, but I've never heard/read anyone actually say WHY bowls are now meaningless b/c of the CFP.

As I've stated before, I would like to see a real 16-team FBS playoff which is conducted completely outside of the bowl system.

Seed 'em 1-16, higher seed hosts until the championship game, which is held at a neutral site. Make it Pasadena, rotate it among several cities, or put it up for bids.

Those teams which don't dance as well as those who exit the dance floor early can go bowling. And whatever alleys are still open, that's fine. Most of the 40+ bowls in existence today are excessive. And if the Myrtle Beach Bowl survives after the real playoff is established, touché to the folks in Horry County.
