because they are trying to strike the guy out because they are trying to get the guy to chase. So, I think we agree in general- Stratton is being too fine. Some of Stratton's location problems are because he is learning how to throw a cutter, which of course is a pitch with a lot of movement- I don't think he knows where that pitch is going all the time yet.
I don't think it's totally the coaches fault that he does that- all the coach is doing is calling a pitch and a location. But, I do think that it's the coaches responsibility to refine and get their thoughts under control.
What happens to most pitchers is they are used to blowing hitters away in high school and piliing up strike outs, and these high school coaches tell these pitchers a lot of times- "Hey, you're throwing 92 or whatever- and you have a great curveball- just go after people and blow them away . You can work on your change up at MSU". And lo and behold it works in high school. But when you pitch in the SEC, the hitters are just too good. And these pitchers have to learn a different mindset and way to pitch which can be very tough sometimes as far as teaching them.
Chris is only a sophomore- and he has a great work ethic- it really might be the best of anyone on the pitching staff. There are certainly some others like Caleb Reed that work hard as well. He's going to go to the Cape Cod League this summer- as is Routt- and that's going to really benefit both of them.
