Personalities are flat. Races are pretty flat especially if you can watch the start go do chores or errands for three hours and come back to see the last 25 laps and not have missed anything. The LA made for TV race had a lot of empty seats after a nice first time event in 2022. Speedway racing is a mess too. Who wants to see a train at 200 mph lap after lap and then a demolition derby at the end.

I’m not a race fan, but I recall Rusty would be “forced” as part of his contract to come to the Miller brewery where I worked when they raced up the road in Martinsville, VA. Our employees who were fans would stand in line (after work hours) waiting to meet him and I always heard he had zero personality as he merely sat at a table signing autographs, with very little to say.
Prior to Wallace, Miller sponsored Bobby Allison, and he was very well liked by the fans and came into the brewery and walked around meeting and talking to them.
Two completely different personalities.
p.s. Rusty’s MGD car sure was nice. I used to have a couple beer taps with that car, but not sure where they went. Bet my son could tell me. 🤣
Bobby Allison drove the Miller High Life car IIRC. Helluva temper on the track, but great with the fans.
Yeah, Rusty could turn on the charm for the TV cameras, but could be aloof with the fans and the meet and greets.

Pocono infield used to be a free for all back in the early 90's and the only thing that separated the driver's haulers and fans was a chain linked fence. Same with the pits. Any caution we'd run to the pits and watch 10 feet behind the crew chief and it was fantastic. They would throw us the hot lug nuts that just came off of the car. It was awesome until they learned they could make money off of it and built another fence 75 feet away.

In 1991 Rusty was leading and there was a rain delay we waited it out late into the day while most everyone left. They called the race and was declared winner and 4 of us went to the fence near his hauler to congratulate him. He wouldn't even look at us or say thanks while almost being within reaching distance behind the fence. He was a total prick to a bunch of 16 year old fans.

I could never understand why they never designed NASCAR with tracks that had both left and right turns. It would have been so much more interesting. Currently it’s just way too monotonous. I prefer F1.

It's be interesting to just have a few races a year where they go counterclockwise around the track...that'd mess up a lot of people

Grew up a Darrel Waltrip fan and lost interest after he retired. Pocono used to be fun when you could sit right behind the pits. There used to be an owner driver named Jimmy Means and the one year at Pocono we were behind his pit. While a lot other team had huge motorized tool boxes, his crew had some of their tools & supplies in Rubbermaid totes. It was no wonder why the guy did not finish so many races. At the time he had a very appropriate car sponsor, Alka-Seltzer.
