Yeah, I guess I contributed to the idiocy because I checked out some of these 'reels' and what not. I have never seen the populace as stupid as they are right now. At least do something cool in your video, like go into the hood and stare people down with weird music like Topnotchidiots.

And this gets to the main problem with the "influencers", the good ones don't rise to the top.

A lot of it is mindless watching. Some of can be interesting. Some of them are nothing but copycats or just starved for attention. Many lose their value after a couple of videos and aren't interesting. Some have figured out how ti make a living on posting videos and good for them. Always someone going to watch. I don't care for many of them. I do follow some for some travel, restaurants, bbq, and cooking stuff. A lot of the people doing "sports" updates for the same crap you see on any social media. Too many people trying it that aren't good at it. Free market will work it out. Unless there is something interesting to someone their viewership will die and they will do something else.

I enjoy travel vlogs and there are great producers of this product. I can name three airline attendants that can out produce Rick Steves when they prioritize travel. They are Jetting Julia, Kacey Cassady, and Kat Nesbit. They don't travel volg all the time but they are great when they do. A motorcycle girl "Itchy Boots" from the Netherlands is outrageously good for global travel. Back in the DVD days I bought Rick Steves content and it was great until the new sheriffs, in town, arrived. Cheers

Travel vlogs can be good and one thing I really like about the ones you’ve recommended is that they have subtitle capability.

One thing I’ve constantly stated about podcasts is that I want transcripts— since I’ve got some deafness in both ears I’ve had some difficulty hearing what people are saying in podcasts even with hearing aids on and so I prefer transcripts or subtitles as aids.

One thing I wish a lot of vlogs did was to emphasize recommendations to people who want to travel— looking through those briefly it appears that many of those videos are more personality driven— which isn’t bad.

However for someone like me who wishes experts would get to the point, I like something more itinerary driven:

Where to stay?
Where to eat?
What to visit?
How to travel?
Helpful Tips?
What to avoid?

And generally the best way for me to get that information is via the written format.

I am guessing a lot of those people aren't what I would consider "influencers". If you're producing actual scripted or semi-scripted entertainment that's not just following you around in your life or you are providing instruction/expertise, I would consider that different from being an influencer, where the only value you are allegedly bringing is exposure to followers, who largely follow you because you have somehow convinced them that you're cool or your life is glamorous or just that you will put them onto cool things or trends.

The "problem" with Rick Steves is that he was so popular at one time his recommendations would result in places getting over run. Not sure if he still has the clout to do that.

The problem with the travel Vlog people is that they are mostly just pushing whoever is paying them to advertise. Doesn't mean they won't give good recommendations, and I'm sure the ones that are smarter are selective about what they push to make sure they maintain some credibility, but I don't think you're going to find the true hidden gems that way. Those places basically don't spend a lot on advertising.
