I used to religiously watch Real World and Road Rules. I would have bought anything that Kendal from RR was selling.
Apply that to today. People as a whole are dumb, and those under 25 without a fully developed frontal lobe are especially dumb.

I am guessing a lot of those people aren't what I would consider "influencers". If you're producing actual scripted or semi-scripted entertainment that's not just following you around in your life or you are providing instruction/expertise, I would consider that different from being an influencer, where the only value you are allegedly bringing is exposure to followers, who largely follow you because you have somehow convinced them that you're cool or your life is glamorous or just that you will put them onto cool things or trends.

You got it. The ones who offer nothing beneficial except "you get a piece of ME!!".

I guess there are THAT many people out there who are chasing the popularity contest.

I think about them like travel agents. There are some I trust especially on restaurants & hotels.

I like watching the ones that go places I will never go, or do things I will never do. Like Africa or ride some of these super expensive trains.

Nerdrotic is good. I’m subscribed to The Critical Drinker as well. His opinions on entertainment is spot on with my views he just does a better job of expressing it than I do. He’s also an author and I need to read one of his books.

Yeah, I do not watch Ron, he is annoying. But with pier folks getting ruder and ruder every time I go, I swapped to surf fishing. Bama Beach Bum taught me all I know about that and if I ever get a boat I have learned a ton from Brant. So I just watch those two, and often not all the way through. Depends on the video.

The "problem" with Rick Steves is that he was so popular at one time his recommendations would result in places getting over run. Not sure if he still has the clout to do that.

The problem with the travel Vlog people is that they are mostly just pushing whoever is paying them to advertise. Doesn't mean they won't give good recommendations, and I'm sure the ones that are smarter are selective about what they push to make sure they maintain some credibility, but I don't think you're going to find the true hidden gems that way. Those places basically don't spend a lot on advertising.

A lot of what you said is on point but it is not absolute. Some travel bloggers do personal work as well as contract work. If you want to see London a girl, Hanna Rickets, has content better that Rick Steves or Rudy Maxa (sp) has ever presented to Americans. One of my favorites Em Sheldon, from Yorkshire, UK, did a great bit of recent work presenting North Dakota and Montana for an American travel organization promoting to a British viewership. She does not vlog all the time but she is next level when she does.

A couple of years ago I got a call from a parent of a kid on my baseball team. The parent tells me that they're not letting the kid play baseball for the next two weeks. I inquire about what's going on.

This damn kid had run up a bill of over a thousand dollars on a credit card signing up to porn sites. I didn't know whether to volunteer to help with punishment or to pull the kid aside and tell him that youporn is free.

Bet that kid is the best 2-strike hitter on the team. Very comfortable choking up on the bat for a shorter, quicker stroke through the zone.

I think Rick Steves' clout primarily rests with the 50+ folks like me.

I also like reading the Facebook posts of one of his writers, Cameron Hewitt. He recently did some travel research in Scotland which I'd like to revisit.
