Why the push to enforce illegal formation penalty now?

Yeah - it's kinda like speed traps. Either enforce all the rules all the time or don't. Why/how decide to really start enforcing a specific rule or two arbitrarily? Heck, if they're going to pick something, I'd rather see them enforce OL holding (talk about flag-fests!), or offensive facemask during a stiffarm...... But, anyways.

I don't know why, but I love it. I've found the almost wing like formation that offensive lines form from tackle to tackle over the last 2-3 decades incomprehensible when compared to the rulebook. Change the rule or enforce the rule.

I just wish they'd flag false starts consistently. How many times at both the college and pro levels do you see the tackles go a split second early with no call?

from my understanding coaches have been complaining for awhile and I guess the league got tired of all the crying.....but Ive always said and always will an offense should be allowed to line up however they want.....as long as everybody is behind the line there should be no illegal formation penalties.....why are you giving that advantage to the defense???

By rules the offense has all kinds of advantages. Got to give the defense something. 🙂

agree but this rule handicaps these great minded OCs.....its 1 thing to even out the play on the field but this penalizes ideas

Great minded OCs have to come up with great ideas that abide by the rules as specified.

You have to have formation rules to determine who the eligible receivers are.

Football is the only sport I know of, that has an "Unsportsmanlike Conduct" penalty. Probably others do, as well, but nothing chaps my *** more than some 2nd/3rd team scrub, whose team is down 20+ pts in the 4th quarter, who throws someone for a 1 yd loss, then starts this chest banging crap. I realize most, 'have never played fans', will not agree but. LOVE this excessive celebration crap after each and every score. Walter Payton said it BEST!!! Act like YOU have been there before. In the "OLD DAYS", THEY, knew how to handle these Hot Dogs. In BASEBALL, THEY called it 'Sticking it in his Ear!' ... IN FOOTBALL, Today!, we call it 'TARGETING'. Let the PLAYERS STOP THIS HOT DOG BS by sticking it in their ear and other places where the sun don't shine!!!

BS, on ALL this HOT DOG crap!!! Grow-UP and Compete!!!, not just show-up, AH's!

but why are these the rules???....the defense has no rules....they can line up any way they want as long as they are behind the LOS....same should be the case for the offense....defense can blitz 9 guys at the QB and come from any direction....load up 5 on a side....but the O has to be in certain places and cant move most of them.....makes no sense to me

I really dont know what that means but it doesn't make your case as to why you believe in these rules
You've never played football in a backyard? There are a lot less rules. I don't have to make the case. Why does a queen get to move diagonally and a rook doesn't? Because it's chess and not checkers.

And we now have a pitch clock in college baseball.
Rule makers job is to make rules whether they make sense or not.

but both queens get to....its not like the white's queen can and the black's queen cant......and checkers dont have queens and rooks so that has no relevance at all....that makes less sense than your backyard statement

Ok. Your just giving me tired head now. The rules are the same for the other teams offense too. I'm sorry they didn't consult you when the rules for the game of football were created. Good night.
