it is really hard for me to believe magazines and newspapers are almost things of the past. I used to love to read magazines and my morning newspaper. I would have never dreamed that landlines would be obsolete, also. (I am a senior citizen.)

They, like all magazines, had no future - another casualty of the internet and podcasts (their recent choices had nothing to do with it). This happens regardless of who is on the cover.

it will be interesting though to see if the world of media is cyclical. I actually like holding books and magazines - I feel like there could be a bourgeoning market for it. Kind of like the resurgence of people buying records.

I haven't taken Sports Illustrated for many years. My Dad bought me a subscription when I was a teenager and I kept it for awhile into my adulthood. When he started my subscription, the first swimsuit issue came out and the cost for a year was $7.50. I waited expectantly every week. There were some good years in there.

Certain kinds of people look at retro living as a way of asserting some control over their lives that modern culture and technology seem to have taken away.

If the quotes associated to the CEO are true, he is a moron leading his company down. It is probably inevitable local papers and many magazines will die off. But this one was big enough to hang on longer. This clown and his thoughts just expedited its demise.

Yeah, you should have put gay fat transgender models on the cover sooner with Pride flags . That would have saved it🤣

It was not highlighted in the link, but that was a Babylon Bee article.

Definitely not just a casualty of the internet killing off print media. SI was, presumably, a major brand. The brand is dead, not just the print media portion.

Their political pursuits killed them. If they kept their focus where it needed to be, they’d still be alive.

There's actually been a notable push back into print media over the past 3-5 years since digital ate a big chuck of the market. SI just fumbled the ball. It wasn't all about the woke stuff either, although placating to that certainly didn't do them any favors.

They just seemed to have really poor vision from leadership in the digital age which helped wreck an iconic brand.

The only thing I subscribe to is the Wall St. Journal. Not cheap but worth it. Speaking of woke, that’s why I stopped subscribing to The State after countless years. The articles on the Editorial page were like watching CNN or MSNBC - in other words garbage. Sad about SI and only having live sports will mean ESPN will survive.

and I never dreamed that we would be paying for water in bottles or at restaurants where they used to put it on the table first before you ever ordered anything. I grew up with well water since we lived on a farm in Blue Ridge area of northern Greenville/Spartanburg counties.

My grandparents would roll over in their graves if they thought I was paying $2 for (bottled) WATER. I can hear my grandpa saying get you a jug and fill it from the spigot....lol

And now they are saying the bottles themselves are harmful to your health.

Me too. I guess this is the way things are now. I’ve learned you just have to adjust to the changes. My kids and grandkids all laugh that I sometimes have trouble adapting. I remind them that life was a little easier and actually cheaper before some of these technological advances.

Remember when it was the hardest ''book'' to get in the school library. Of course, in today's elementary school, there are much more attractive ''books'' on the shelves.

Someone posted on another site…that SI was started at Pine Lakes Country Club in Myrtle Beach.

Birthplace of Sports Illustrated Monument

Field review by the editors.

Myrtle Beach, South Carolina

Pine Lakes Country Club opened in Myrtle Beach in 1927. It was here, in 1954, that Sports Illustrated was invented. The man behind it was Henry Luce, who was not a sports fan, but who was the publisher of Life, Time, and Fortune magazines. Luce ordered 67 of his writers and editors to Pine Lakes to come up with a weekly sports magazine that he could sell. Most of them thought the idea was crazy, but Luce was powerful enough to get the magazine distributed and rich enough to absorb its poor sales in its first years. Today, a monument stands next to the clubhouse where the magazine was born, and Pine Lakes is proud of its place in publishing history.

Went woke Then broke.

The magazines, published since 1954, also lost sight of its main audience when it put a photo of a transgender on the cover for its swimsuit edition, starting with Leyna Bloom in 2021 and Kim Petras in 2023, and also started using clinically obese models in swimsuits in its annual world-famous swimsuit edition

Don't forget Martha Stewart...

They, like all magazines, had no future -

With so many sources of information, I've always thought it odd and counter-productive for newspapers to require removing ad blockers, prior to continuing, when streaming an article on-line.

I always bait my hook when I go fishing but, never dropped my ad blocker to proceed.

I always enjoyed the "Faces in the Crowd" column.
