The World Cup doesn't start until late November, but I'm trying to figure out how to handle it. I generally decide things like this on my own, but I thought it would be best to get the input of soccer fans on the board.

In general, my preference is to conduct discussions in siloed threads, so that all the discussions about ABC take place in the same thread, and we don't end up with too many threads about the same or similar subjects/events. The World Cup is a big event, and lots of soccer fans and non-soccer fans will be watching and wanting to discuss it, so I'm trying to figure out the best approach.

My inclination is to:

- set up a general World Cup thread for non USA matches
- set up a USMNT-specific World Cup thread

That's the simplest way to handle the World Cup.

Some alternatives are:

- set up the above threads, but also have match threads for USA competitions
- set up the above threads, but also have a match thread for the final
- take a different approach (please specify what you'd prefer)

As I mentioned previously, we have some time before the competition to figure out the best approach. Pipe in with your thoughts on the subject, and I'll factor them in as I decide how to handle the World Cup. I'm tagging those that have commented a great deal on soccer threads, but I'm happy to hear from anybody that will be watching the upcoming World Cup and/or looks forward to discussing it.

Totally agree with your inclination. I like when things are wrapped up in one single thread like we do with EPL.

I would even consider just doing 1 thread for everything, including USMNT, but I can see where someone else starts up a separate US thread before a given game.

I like the idea of a thread for everything US related (could even just rename our current thread as it gets closer), and one for everything else related to the tournament.

Although we might need another thread just to talk about the awesomeness of Brendan Aaronson. If not, discussions about the Medford Messi might overwhelm the other threads.

Yeah I like one thread as well. Hopefully most would just keep it to the one thread.

Two threads - one to discuss the World Cup, the other to b*tch about it. Do that for PSU games too. :D

First off you are not allowed to go on vacation during the world cup :ROFLMAO: Secondly I like your thoughts a USMNT thread and a WC general thread. You can also be open if someone has a good idea to create additional threads that maybe deserve their own space.

Thanks for asking for input, Tom.

I think your initial instinct to have separate threads for the World Cup in general and the USMNT is entirely appropriate. Since we are used to game threads for each PSU game around here, it may be appropriate to have individual match play-by-play threads for the USMNT. Would you also consider a separate thread for play-by-play of all non-US matches? Just one generic thread that runs the whole tournament and you could also slot the Final into it? Maybe a setup that looks something like this:

USMNT World Cup General Discussion Thread

World Cup General Discussion Thread (Non-USA)

World Cup Matches PBP Thread (Non-USA)

USMNT-Wales PBP Thread

USMNT- England PBP Thread

etc.

I suggest keeping match threads separate because having one thread for both play-by-play posts and general discussion can get lengthy and littered. I would think a general PBP thread for all non-USMNT matches would perhaps suffice for the entire tournament; or, if not, then have a general PBP match thread (non-USA) for the group stage and another for the knockout rounds.

Or, alternatively......

USMNT World Cup General Discussion Thread

USMNT World Cup All Matches PBP Thread

World Cup General Discussion Thread (Non-USA)

World Cup All Matches PBP Thread (Non-USA)

Four is simpler and less crowded, but still separates analysis and discussion from play-by-play postings.

OR :)

USMNT World Cup General Discussion Thread

USMNT World Cup All Matches PBP Thread

All Non-USA World Cup PBP & Discussion Thread

That would be three threads.

I agree with folks here to have one U.S. thread and one everyone else thread. Let’s see how far we get with the U.S. thread. o_O
