Let's be honest (and I think Iger is doing that right now), the game is the star, not the sideline personalities. Can they enhance (or take away from) the game experience? I think so. But at the end of the day, people are going to watch the games they want based on the matchups, not whose voice they hear during the broadcast.
Obviously, you haven't heard a CFB game called by Beth Mowins. It's notably abnormal to expectations. Mute button is necessary.

I may get crucified for this, but I’ll miss Pollack because I really enjoyed him on Gameday (I hated him when he played for Georgia). Now comes the annual question of when will Corso retire? Whether you like him or not, he’s had a hell of a run but he’s not nearly as sharp as he used to be. He also misses a lot of time.

I definitely prefer Pollack to Pat McAfee who just signed an $85 million contract with ESPN. I don’t watch Gameday often, but when he’s on I have a hard time staying on the channel.

Flanders, I tuned in ‘The Game of the Week’ to see & hear Dizzy & PeeWee about as much as the game itself.

A decade later Gifford, Cosell & Dandy Don did about the same for MNF.

I definitely believe that those speaking over the game can have an effect - but I think we're seeing a market adjustment to see how much that is worth.

Peyton Manning, Romo, Brady - they're worth a pretty penny. But maybe not as much as they think they are. Could you pay someone half of what they demand and still have people watch a game? Absolutely! The game is the star.

The politics have completely turned me off. I watch nothing on ESPN except a SC game. They should return to professional journalists and play by play announcers with true radio voices. Keith Jackson, Curt Gowdy, Chris Schenkel, Vin Scully and Howard Cosell come to mind.
Those announcers and their personalties are from a long gone era. I throughly enjoyed the names you listed, but then I ask, were they all actually better ? or did most of us think they were better since they are who we grew up with ?
BTW: I do actually prefer the names you listed with the exception of Schenkel (Too obvious of an ND homer)

Pollack never bothered me much, but he never had anything good to say about the Cocks! McAfee is tolerable he brings a little something different, Corso, sad to say it's time! I'll usually flip back and forth to SEC Nation, they could use some changes as well, Tebow never shuts up, he's definitely one that is trying way too hard to impress you with his knowledge, Finebaum can't get a word in edgewise with Tebow on there, he looks pissed off the entire broadcast, now in my opinion Jordan Rodger's is one of the best things ESPN has, he's a pretty boy, but he knows his stuff. Get rid of Tebow and bring in Ryan Mcgee would make that show way better.

Extremely evil or cruel
But also:
"of a very poor quality; extremely bad or unpleasant." - Oxford Languages

In citing definitions, it pays to cite all that apply.

In any case, she severely punishes anyone tuning in hoping to enjoy a football game telecast.

The only broadcasts I keep (kept) up with are Marty & McGee and Keyshawn, J Will & Max. KJM has been a staple of my mornings. I did not know about the cuts. I tuned in yesterday morning to listen, and none of the three were on. I didn’t think it was permanent, nor did I know who was on. Within 10 minutes I was turning it off. The voices were grating.
I don’t follow the nba, so most of those national shows (tv and radio) are of no use to me!

Can’t believe Corso wasn’t let go.. It hurts to even watch him and shame on his family for allowing this to continue… reminds me of someone else that’s always in the news.

Disney needs ESPN to be as profitable as possible because their movies suck now. The newest Indiana Jones will be another bomb. And Disney+ is awful.

Disney has made some costly purchases (20th Century Fox catalog largely), launching Disney+ (they've struggled with churn), and had some bad
theatrical releases. Disney did their layoffs in waves starting with high dollar salaries first. I expect more layoffs at S-Pun.

The only personality they let go that even registers with me is Pollack. I've never had a problem with him like some others do.
I wish they'd have brought in McAffee at a lower dollar amount and left some to retain Pollack.

I don't watch anything much but college football and basketball.

I'm a football ganatic who used to watch GameDay a lot, but got kind of tired of it, so I might not be their target audience.

But that Macaffee literally makes me change the channel anytime he opens his loud obnoxious mouth.

I think it was the national title game pregame where I saw him for the first and last time.

They need to fire buffoons like that, and just hire someone to talk about the games.

With all the cable cutting I knew this was coming. At one time ESPN had over 100,000 subscribers and now they are down to 70,000. It is projected that in another 2 years the subscriptions will be down to 50,000. These providers also charge a monthly fee which is about $100. Those network fees have been cut as well. People have gone to other ways to not have to pay those fees, hulu, youtubetv. To add on top Netflix has had numerous layoffs because people have cancelled their subscriptions. So the writers in California took that brunt as they have had to pay agents to negotiate their salaries. Well like ESPN with all the cable cutting and losing all that revenue the writers in California are on strike. They will not be able to get the salaries they got in the past, plus a lot of people are not going to support these companies that support the woke movement. I cancelled Net Flix because they kept going up and I am not going to support a business that supports the Woke movement. I would not be surprised if ESPN did not spin off ESPN and whoever buys it will charge $200-$300 a year for ESPN. That is where this is going. The days of sitting at home and watching a football game on tv for only your monthly bills we be coming to an end. They will also probably let you buy a SEC, ACC package for $300-$400 a year. I am just the messenger on this. This is where the free days of sitting home and watching a game on tv for basically your monthly bill is coming to an end.

Going to PPV-only makes more sense than that future model you described. I remember when HBO had PPV content... and it should cost me less than $300 per year if I only had to do that for USC football games that were only available on ESPN (PPV).

They hired him for that exact reason. Apparently it resonates with younger fans. I think it’s stupid how pragmatic CFB coverage has become.

Yep, first year I’ve noticed a lot of the baseball games that were on the app are now switched over to espn+! Just get a lttle bit more out of you!

Gene Wojciechowski the latest casualty, while they think the country wants to be subjected to that idiot McAfee(whatever his name is) and Screamin' A. Smith.

If they wanted cutbacks I'd been OK with them getting rid of either of them(McAfee if I had to choose one) and while they're at it they can get rid of Molly Qerim and Mike Greenburg too!

I miss the days of Two minute drill, Sportscentury, Stump the Schwab, Battle lines etc. back when they actually HAD good programming. History channel's gone the same way.

It does amaze me they pay exorbitant salaries to some and are firing others, but it is their option who to keep and who not to keep! I bet Herbstreit make a bunch!

Haven't been able to change the channel fast enough when I accidentally channel surf and see him talking.

But he's apparently firing up the race baiting anticipating his own layoff.

On a recent episode of "The Stephen A. Smith Show," the "First Take" host weighed in on the latest round of layoffs.

"This ain’t the end. More is coming," Smith said. "And yes ladies and gentlemen, I could be next.

"Don’t ever, ever, ever in your life, as a Black person, take anything for granted. I told you before when White folks catch a cold, Black folks catch pneumonia."

It's sad to say. I know some don't like him, but he's just part of the College GameDay experience. But what you say is true. It's hard to even understand what he's saying a lot of times, and he's just really out of touch. ESPN and his family should have let/forced him retire gracefully, but it's too late for that. Too bad he had to stay and Pollack had to go. Pollack is sharp.

Insufferable bigot.
