I doubt they would hire Mullen...but it's definitely possible

Wonder what the hell is wrong with Meyer? He must have cancer or something to resign abruptly like this

No way I saw this coming. Now I'm going to worry myself to death that they don't go after Mullen.

That was the first thing that came to mind when I heard. It's gotta be some type of terminal illness or something.

this is just pure speculation on my part..

A) I remember him going to the hospital for dehydration after the SEC Championship game. They did some test and the results have come back w/ some type of cancer or illness.

B) Sex Scandal

He keeps saying he wants to focus on his family. Sounds fishy to me..

it's long, but a good article. says in there over the years, he's had intense headaches and several chest pain incidents and had even been told by doctors the stress and anxiety from coaching could kill him..

Current Utah Utes head coach. He's an Urban Meyer desciple and has been a head coach for a while. Utah runs basically the same system Florida does now. Also, Utah just won their ninth straight bowl victory.

Plug in Kyle Whittingham and they never miss a beat.

clinical depression or some other psychiatric disorder.

I think that loss to Bama darn near killed him. I think he felt like this year was his best chance to go undefeated, have a guy win the Heisman, and win a NC. It didn't happen, and all of a sudden after the SEC Championship Game, he ends up in the hospital.

If the reports are correct, and he stays in Gainesville, and my speculation is correct, they should hire an interim coach for a year and see what the situation is with Meyer. If he isn't better after that, then go get someone else.

Here's part that talks about the headaches.
<p style="font-style: italic;">This time Meyer didn't blow it off. He went to a doctor the following week, and when he was shown the CAT scan, he could see the big, dark mass. "That's a tumor on my brain," Meyer said. "Oh my gosh...." He felt a flash of terror, saw images of Shelley and the girls and four-year old Nate, and at 39 he realized that he just might die.</p> <p style="font-style: italic;">But no: It wasn't a tumor but the same arachnoid cyst, inflamed again by stress, rage, excitement. Again, a doctor told Meyer he had to ease up. This time he listened. "Ever since that day, on the sideline you'll see me-I'm trying to stay very composed," he says. "I have headaches, but not like that. I've changed."</p>

Then it hit. The pain stampeded through his skull, near-blinding, far worse than the time in South Bend: "It was killing me," Meyer says. The Utes won, the game ended in a roiling riot of celebration, and, Lord, Meyer tried. He took his ecstatic players into the locker room and led them in prayer, grinning to show he was happy, though the grinning hurt too. He stumbled into the training room, and the men there laid him out on a table.

Mullen could take the UF job as another resume building job. UF has a stable of athletes almost ensuring Mullen success for a year or two. If myer returns to UF, mullen has a high profile HC job w/success on his resume and he lands another high profile hc job. If myer doesn't come back and mullen has success, he just stay's at florida. Could be a win-win for mullen. Not to mention the huge raise he would get for leaving MSU for UF. I hope he stays at MSU!!!!!

I assure you Dan already knew about this and he is either already gone to Utah or is leaving tomorrow for a couple of days skiing with his wife. Even if he did leave, and I don't think he will, you can bet that Tubby is already on the phone to Byrne and Byrne is no Templeton, so we are okay. Dan will probably be high on their list but I have faith he is staying.
