I must be way behind... What happened to Dick Rice? While we're at it, is Cathy Nash still around?
Dick Rice died back during Covid.I must be way behind... What happened to Dick Rice? While we're at it, is Cathy Nash still around?
Yes. Matt is a who directly replaced Dick. I think after Matt was hired Dick was still there for the first year or two and then Matt took over. Dick would still pop randomly when Matt would be on vacation and do some forecasts. I feel bad for John he’s been there forever, with Dick and with Matt.Dick Rice died back during Covid.
As far as WTVA goes, they will have prerecorded forecasts from the weather channel. I'm guessing during severe events they'll have somebody back in Atlanta trying to cover it.What does local weather look like going forward? Do we see local businesses residents supporting him on YouTube? We got to have him, Atlanta does not have the understanding of our area and local landmarks.
….AI: Stealing Jobs From Mississippians for 5 Decades********Has laid off Chief Meteorologist Matt Laubaun and is laying off the entire meteorological staff. Weather will now be a feed from The Weather Channel in Atlanta. Just WOW!
Is he not retirement ready? He was on there when I was in middle school in the early 90’s it seems. Why no one worried about my boy Johnny D? Been watching him for probably 25 years
He’s got a liquor store on west side of town i guess he can fall back on

I could have written this exact post a couple of years ago. I’m 59 and have lived on this once family farm about 55 of those 59 years. I’ve lost trees. I’ve lost sheds and barns. I’ve lost shingles. I’ve stood on my porch and watched funnel clouds pass nearby but nothing compares to that SOB being on top of you. It scared the ever loving crap out of me. When you live through one, it changes you.Dude I'm almost 60 and have lived in the 'Sip most of my life. I've been through much bad weather. In the 70s a tornado hit my grandfather's house who lived about 100 yards from us and Katrina downed a tree about 10 yards from my house. Wind gusts have destroyed out structures at my house and I've had several shooting houses destroyed by storms. I've got caught in a terrible storm on the Rez (would have capsized, but fortunately was close to Safe Harbor Marina). Two years ago I had my roof replaced due to hail. I'm one of those, "when you time is up, it's up" folks.
The one thing I don't eff around with is lighting. I head inside quickly. As you Airmen know, nothing can stop the USAF except lightening in 5.
I get what you're saying but the opposite is state run media like China and North Korea.I am a big fan of capitalism, but there are some businesses that should not be in private sector. The local weather is one of these. I think you should allow it to be supported by local ads, but when it is all about the dollar good people get fired and people will get hurt.
I agree, we do not want state run media. That’s why I say local weather, the rest needs to be outside the government, but even private sector can be fishy. Example, most YouTube, independent journalists are owned by someone, but that is another topic for another day.I get what you're saying but the opposite is state run media like China and North Korea.
There is a lot I wish I could say about all of this but can't.
Soooo like the National Weather Service?I am a big fan of capitalism, but there are some businesses that should not be in private sector. The local weather is one of these. I think you should allow it to be supported by local ads, but when it is all about the dollar good people get fired and people will get hurt.
I am talking about the broadcast of weather. Maybe bring local weather into NWS would be the answer. Split coast between NWS and local ads.Soooo like the National Weather Service?
WCBI would own the weather and actually all NE MS news reporting, if they hire him, and occasionally get national exposure.Man, some of you guys must be terrified to get in a car. **
seriously, somewhere between completely preempting the big football games & firing your whole staff is a happy medium. Their local news ratings will tank. If I’m WCBI, I’m at least considering maybe fire my weather guy & hire this guy.
If I am WCBI I was on phone last night with him.WCBI would own the weather and actually all NE MS news reporting, if they hire him, and occasionally get national exposure.
Who owns WCBI? Imes or larger group?
I read what you said. It only takes one. I used to be like you.Hopefully, you can read that I've been through more than one and I'm not going to start watching the news/weather. My 89 year old mother, living in the middle of BFE, doesn't even have local channels or internet, all she gets is direct TV/dish. I'll venture to say that even though she's lived here her entire life, she'd never intentionally watched a newscast. She can tell you about anything on the Hallmark Channel or Animal Planet though. Some folks just aren't scared of weather, we respect it and understand the danger, we just aren't fearful of it. This may sound strange, but I almost get wood over Hurricanes. Yes I understand how destructive they are (I rode out Katrina in Jxn and deployed to the coast a couple days after landfall), but I love them.
In November 2003, Imes Communications sold WCBI to current owner Morris Multimedia with the sale closing on January 14 of the next year. It was the last remaining station of Imes' once-sizable smaller-market broadcasting group. The Commercial Dispatch remains under Imes family ownership to this day.WCBI would own the weather and actually all NE MS news reporting, if they hire him, and occasionally get national exposure.

Cathy Nash..haven’t heard from her in many yearsI must be way behind... What happened to Dick Rice? While we're at it, is Cathy Nash still around?
WCBI weather man reading this thread like WTF guys?!?!Man, some of you guys must be terrified to get in a car. **

Send it to Keenum. Write a good email about how much he and that information means to this area.Too bad Mississippi state doesn’t bring him in to the meteorology department to teach. Then set him up a podcast and his own broadcast through the university. State could develop their own weather app.
I couldn’t tell you who the WCBI weather guy or gal is and I live right in the middle of the two stations. That’s how much Matt dominated weather forecasting in NE Ms.WCBI weather man reading this thread like WTF guys?!?!
I actually had some interaction with Cathy Nash back in the day. TV made her much more attractive than real life. I don’t think I ever saw her off air without a cigarette in her hand and it took its toll on her.Cathy Nash..haven’t heard from her in many years
Also.

It was Jimmy KimmelI’ll argue that Matt is the most famous news anchor in MS in the past quarter century. Maybe ever. Didn’t several of his outtakes make it to late night talk show? I’ve never seen someone have the passion and dedication to doing this like him.
I hate this for the people of NE MS. Matt will land on his feet in a MAJOR market. My understanding is the only reason he was still in Tupelo was because of his wife working there as well. He can probably call his shot. I wouldn’t be shocked to see him in a top 20 market soon.
Dang good idea.Too bad Mississippi state doesn’t bring him in to the meteorology department to teach. Then set him up a podcast and his own broadcast through the university. State could develop their own weather app.
I'm just gong to (hopefully) die in blissful ignorance. Along with my mother who hasn't watched a newscast in 89 years. Seriously, there's a 50/50 chance she has no idea who the POTUS is. Mentally/physically she's sharp as a tack, but oblivious to current events. It's probably a better way to live.I could have written this exact post a couple of years ago. I used to think exactly the same way but as I’ve gotten older I’ve come to the realization that I don’t want to leave my daughter in law all my money. So I’ve either got to outlive her or spend it all!I'm just gong to (hopefully) die in blissful ignorance. Along with my mother who hasn't watched a newscast in 89 years. Gettin' sucked into a tornado would be a pretty cool way to die. I want to die either fighting a Polar Bear, or trying to summit Everest against the guide's advice.
MS weather fatality rate is 26.4 per million people per year. I’ll definitely keep an eye on the weather & my app during bad weather. But I’m not watching David Hartman for 3 hours every time there’s a storm.I'm just gong to (hopefully) die in blissful ignorance. Along with my mother who hasn't watched a newscast in 89 years. Haha, I'm planning on spending it all. The issue is you work for 25 - 30 years to get a seven figure nest egg, then you start thinking, I've worked and sacrificed to save this money, I don't want to spend it. I've had other folks in my age bracket have the same thought.I used to think exactly the same way but as I’ve gotten older I’ve come to the realization that I don’t want to leave my daughter in law all my money. Barbie Bassett say "Fo shizzle"This is what happens when less companies or people own more TV and Radio stations. The local pride or service is lost. My Daughter worked in radio for many years and I watched them mismanage what they had. They did NOT want their on air personalities to become "famous" because they would have to pay them. They never considered by them be local celebrities they could make more money if they got off their butts and sold air time. The Social Media companies figured that out and that's why they pay "influencers" with many followers good money.
No one is worse than WJTV about this. They use 4 sentences to tell you that someone died in a shootout, and then can't use grammar properly. Can someone post that video classic time with Matt and John covering the tornado.
Another thing - WTVA has the worst spelling for their captions. It became almost a sporting event to watch the WTVA news and see spelling errors on the screen from their caption summary of an event.
It was laughable and sad, that they really hired people that could not spell.
