Yeah, pull the trigger, hire Mike Leach. The Bears definitely need to piss off the NCAA....
Vaught didn't play Alabama until late in his career. He played them from 1965-1970, his last 6 years. He went 2-4 in those games. He also lost the 1964 Sugar Bowl to Alabama, so he was 2-5 against Alabama.
From what I've heard from an Alabama alum that played for Bryant, Bryant wanted the same type of deal LSU was getting, where we would play almost exclusively in Tuscaloosa or Birmingham, but Vaught didn't want to do that since he was already doing that with LSU. That's why they didn't play during the 50s and early 60s. From 1947-1970, we played LSU 17 times in Baton Rouge, 3 times in Oxford, and 3 times in Jackson. Alabama wanted a similar deal.
This is how Vaught fared against the SEC teams from 1947-1970, not counting the one year where he came back for part of the year to relieve Kinard.
LSU (25) - 15-7-3 (one win in the Sugar Bowl)
MSU (24) - 18-2-4
Kentucky (24) - 17-6-1
Vanderbilt (21) - 15-4-2
Tennessee (19) - 12-7
Tulane (18) - 15-3
Alabama (7) - 2-5 (one loss in the Sugar Bowl)
Auburn (6) - 4-2 (one win in the Liberty Bowl and one loss in the Gator Bowl)
Georgia (6) - 4-2
Florida (5) - 3-2 (one win in the Gator Bowl)
Georgia Tech (1) - 0-1 (one loss in the Sugar Bowl)
His highest profile regular OOC opponent was Arkansas, who he went 8-4 against with one of those wins coming in the 1970 Sugar Bowl.
Obviously, his conference regulars were Kentucky, Vanderbilt, Tulane, LSU, MSU, and Tennessee. LSU was obviously the best of those opponents, and he fared really well against them, especially considering the majority of the games were road games. Tulane's last year in the SEC was 1966 by the way, and Vaught didn't play them after that point.
