Former Alabama first baseman Davis Heller died in the fall, with an announcement coming from North Greenville University, where Heller transferred and began school last semester. He was 22 years old. On Friday, the Alabama Crimson Tide baseball team decided to honor their former teammate with a helmet decal with his initials on the back of their helmets.

The Crimson Tide have already begun their three-game series this weekend with the Richmond Spiders. Friday afternoon’s game started at 3:00 PM ET. The series will continue on Saturday and wrap up on Sunday, with another game at noon.

An initial investigation noted Davis Heller appeared to have died of natural causes.

“Our baseball program is heartbroken over the loss of an amazing human being and brother in Christ,” said NGU Coach Landon Powell in the announcement. “Davis was a positive force everywhere he went. A gentle giant who greeted everyone with a smile and constantly uplifted those around him. An example of what a great teammate should be, Davis has left a lasting legacy on this program. A great competitor, but even better friend to those who got to know him.”

Heller, a junior who had transferred to NGU — the reigning Division 2 national champions — spent two seasons as an infielder, namely a first basemen, for Alabama. He appeared in 23 games in two seasons and hit .216 in those games. He didn’t make an error in the field.

Alabama baseball released a message following Heller’s passing later.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the Heller family,” the tweet read. “Davis was loved by everyone and a friend to all. He will be missed.”
