Carolina Panthers rookie Bryce Young is now set financially as a millionaire playing quarterback in the NFL. But Young had a much different job as he started his college career at Alabama.

Young revealed on Tuesday that he was a DoorDash driver during his freshman season with the Crimson Tide.

Young signed with Alabama as the top quarterback and the No. 2 overall player in the country for the class of 2020, according to the On3 Industry rankings. He benefited from Name, Image and Likeness later in his college career, but as Young pointed out, NIL was not yet an option when he arrived in Tuscaloosa. Because of that, he ended up delivering food for extra cash as a freshman.

“When I first got there I was just learning the playbook and everything,” Bryce Young said at Panthers training camp on Tuesday. “After that, I was driving for DoorDash, and honestly I would have like a mask on and a hoodie. And I would only accept ‘drop it at my door’ orders. So for the most part I never really got recognized or anything. But you know, this was before NIL.”

Young was a backup behind Mac Jones during his first season at Alabama and appeared in nine games as the Crimson Tide won the national title. In his first season as a starter in 2021, Young set the Alabama single-season marks for passing yards with 4,872 and touchdowns with 47, on his way to winning the Heisman Trophy.

This past season, Young passed for 3,328 yards and 32 touchdowns, before being the No. 1 overall pick in the 2023 NFL draft.

Bryce Young details what it was like to take the field for his first practice in NFL

Bryce Young has come a long ways since his days as a DoorDash drive.

Young and the Panthers started training camp last week, and he spoke about what it was like to take the field for his first NFL practice.

“I wouldn’t say it was much nerves today. More just being anxious and excited to get back out there. You go a couple of weeks without it, and you start to miss it,” Young said. “It’s just fun. I was definitely looking forward to it for weeks now, and, now that it’s here, it’s great.”

The experience can only feel better for Young with so much pressure off his back. On Wednesday, Carolina Panthers head coach Frank Reich named Young the team’s starting quarterback for the upcoming season.

While the announcement is huge, it isn’t a surprise. Young is the only player in Alabama history to throw for 3,000+ yards in two seasons. Moreover, the 5-foot-10 QB finished second in program history for career passing yards (8,356) and passing touchdowns (80), earning the 2021 Heisman Trophy.
