WATCH: Alabama radio call honors Eli Gold after first touchdown of the season
For years, Eli Gold has been the voice of Alabama football. Known as a living legend in Tuscaloosa, Gold was not able to call the first game of the season due to health issues. Chris Stewart has taken over for the matchup against Utah State, with the Crimson Tide already having a huge lead.
After Alabama scored their first touchdown, Stewart went out of his way to honor Gold. He said “we miss you Eli” before shouting Gold’s signature “touchdown, Alabama!” If Gold was on the call, it would have been a special moment in itself. Now, with the Alabama radio broadcast honoring him, it’s a touching tribute.

As for the play itself, Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback Bryce Young marched down the field before connecting with Georgia transfer wide receiver Jermaine Burton. It was just a five-yard touchdown pass, giving the Crimson Tide a 10-0 lead at the time.

Chris Stewart will take over for Gold while he recovers. Stewart is currently an anchor for the Tide football broadcast. He also covers play-by-play duties for the Alabama basketball and baseball team.
Alabama also announced that Stewart will host “The Nick Saban Show” and “Hey, Coach” radio broadcasts, which returned on Aug. 18. There has been no timetable for Gold’s return to the broadcast booth.
On top of calling Crimson Tide games, Eli Gold also hosted NASCAR Live on the Motor Racing Network from 1982 to 2016. The Brooklyn, New York native is now 68 years old.
